  • first open a terminal then type or paste

    sudo rm -r /var/lib/apt/lists
    sudo mkdir -p /var/lib/apt/lists/partial
    apt-get clean
    apt-get update

i have had this and it seemed to be caused by the proxy i use blocking the connections when not authenticated and sending back the wrong file to mint
make sure you have mint configured to use the proxy (if you are using one ) and that you are logged in to it if it is filtered ask your admin or use a proxy with apt to circumvent the filtering
