Home Learn Linux Linux Answers Desktop Desktop doesnt load after update from Mint 13 to 15
  • Part of the answer seems to be here:
    Go to ctrl-alt-f1. And type this :
    $ sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
    $ sudo apt-get remove gdm --purge
    $ sudo apt-get install gdm ubuntu-desktop xubuntu-desktop
    $ sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

    It is part answer only because this is for Ubuntu/Xubuntu and features ubuntu-desktop and xubuntu-desktop, which of course are not relevant to Linux Mint. What desktop of Linux Mint are you using?

  • This is a stab-in-the-dark test for you to make, since this seems to be a display problem: At your boot-splash screen, tap a key to interrupt the boot, press TAB to enter in another boot option, and type in "nomodeset" (without quotes) at the end, such as "... quiet splash nomodeset --". Some other possible options to try are "noapic" or "nolapic". The "nomodeset" has helped me in the past with black screen issues. If your display starts, you can add nomodeset to your grub.cfg for a permanent workaround, or you can at least access your system to find another solution or backup important files.
