Home Learn Linux Linux Answers Desktop Can I download linux os to a flash drive and install on a laptop that has lost its OS?
  • If your BIOS has not been damaged YES! It would be better to use something like a Ubuntu Live CD/DVD, and format your USB flash Drive.
Then follow the installation instructions. Ubuntu 8 onwards will do
this. Remember you have to had the USB drive plugged in with no glitches or your system won't see it and won't boot.
Most Linux variants will do this now, you use to have to insert special lines of code in the image files..or start scripts..(those pages by the way are still on the net if you need them)..only a few holdouts won't. By the way IF your BIOS IS damaged by a worm/virus/ can still use the CD/DVD drive to make USB boot drives. Now IF your CD/DVD is missing or not working..just make a boot USB from a separate machine..usually use a HP system to boot another HP system..Dell to boot a Dell..or make drives.
Anything more exotic than that I can't help you...but the answer may be on the net somewhere..just google "linux USB flash boot issues" or similar and you should get most of the helpful info out there. WW
