  • Its a software which provides GUI for Operating systems.
    GUIs like KDE and Gnome run on X Window system.

  • XWindows is a display and network protocol. There are 2 major implementations on Linux: XFree86 and Xorg.

    In almost all cases a window manager is running that is Using XWindows to display what you see on the screen.
