What version of Ubuntu did you install? You shouldn't have to do anything in Ubuntu 10.04 to get an Internet connection. It should work OOTB. If it doesn't, then there must be a hardware compatibility problem. What is the make and model of your laptop's NIC? |

This is one of the no-brainers in Linux. One does not need to do anything to get the original Ethernet connection started. You mention making changes to IP and DNS? If you are running a custom setup and need to know specific instructions on how to set that up. please be more specific. |

If you are in fact running Ubuntu, you will have an icon in the notification area of the top gnome-pannel on your screen (top right cornet) for Network Manager. From there, you will be able to configure your network settings much like you would in Windows. So if you need nothing more than DHCP, then you will just click on "Auto Eth0". However, if you must manually specify IP addresses and DNS settings, you can right-click on the icon and then click on "edit connections" and go from there. |
