Home Learn Linux Linux Answers Internet how i use exe files
  • exe files are windows based executables, windows based applications are not natively supported on operating systems other than windows. If you wish to use windows based applications in Linux you can use an emulator such as wine, cedega or crossover games/office. However some apps cannot be emulated correctly and some others absolutely will not work outside of windows.

  • Yeah, it is right linux cannot run exe files the only way to run exe files is using wine or from a virtual machine with a Windows OS license pre installed. You can use wine to run certain programs but it depends what kind of exe file you want to run. You need to specify what is the exe file or the application that you want to run but it depends no all the exe files runs on wine. I have installed some programs successfully using wine.

  • issue the "file" command with the name of tour .exe file as the argument. If file reports that it's either a 32 bit or 64 bit file for Windows (a PE file) then you will need sometihng like Wine, or Corss-over, or cedega. If file reports that it's an MS-DOS or PC-DOS executable (the latter is most like a .com file, though), then all you need is a tool like dosemu or dosbox.

  • You can run windows exe files using Wine. Wine is an implementation of win32 api on linux.
But its not guaranteed that the file will run. Still you can try out.
