Answers
  • The various docks and other desktop effects all slow your system down. They work as a on top of the window manager to change the way that various elements are presented to the users. If you are running an onboard video card or don't have your video card optimized for 3d acceleration then the effects will be more present.

  • if you need a Yes or No answer, then I should say YES, but its not like it will eat all of your system resources. If you have a very good hardware army, then dont worry about it, but if you a user who always into system performance not the system look n feel, then, just use normal Gnome or XFCE
