May be the cdrom laser dirty and creates the problem. Try using a CD Cleaner cd to clean it. Have u tried with Command line as: cdrecord |

as Rechil stated it might be a bit of dust If i had to guess i would say you have a busted upgrade . What is called a "Frankensteined " install .A mix of to different versions of the Operating System . |
