Microsoft has had some exceptional people driving its open-source strategy over the years. Now, with Sam Ramji, senior director of platform strategy and Microsoft's point man on open source, officially leaving for a Silicon Valley-based startup, Microsoft has the opportunity to select someone that will ramp its open-source engagement to the next level.
Oracle has much to say to Sun customers in a front-page advertisement it placed in Thursday's European edition of The Wall Street Journal. The advertisement commits to greater investments in Sun hardware and Solaris software, but has absolutely nothing to say about MySQL.

Microsoft Corp. has suggested in recent years that companies using the Linux computer-operating system might be violating Microsoft patents. Now, in an effort to avert any legal threat that might discourage the adoption of Linux, a group of Microsoft rivals is about to acquire a set of patents formerly owned by the software giant.
After many months of growing requests by corporate users, Ubuntu Linux is now offering a new high-level support plan to large corporations to better serve their employees who use Ubuntu Linux for their work.
