The People Who Support Linux: You

infogfx people linux finalIf you talk to the Fortune 500 companies, they will tell you Linux is running everything. The operating system has become so dominant over the last decade that it's become the fabric of computing across geographies, markets and industries. It has done this with the support of people like you. Every person in the community is responsibile for this success. Linux is built collaboratively by more than 8,000 developers from more than 800 companies. But so many more people contribute to Linux in a variety of ways, from sharing the latest story on Linux.com to making a video about how to use basic Linux commands or participating in the local Linux User Group, to name only a few examples.

You can also support the work of Linux creator Linus Torvalds and the Linux operating system by becoming an individual member of The Linux Foundation. The Linux Foundation this month is hosting an Individual Membership Drive in which every new member who signs up by June 30 will receive 50 percent off of their attendance fee for LinuxCon North America or LinuxCon Europe. Your choice. The savings are worth up to $337, which pays for the $99 membership fee three times over. Additionally, individual members of The Linux Foundation get all kinds of perks, including a Linux.com email address ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , for example); employee purchase pricing from Dell, HP and Lenovo; 35 percent off of O'Reilly books and e-books; and much more. You might even get invited to be profiled on Linux.com by Digital Content Editor Libby Clark.

But the most important perk is knowing that your support is having an impact on Linux and the Linux community by helping to promote, protect and advance it for generations to come. Join us today and reap the rewards.

Can we get a list of these 800 countries?

  • Nick Said:

You shouldn't call Linux operating system because is not, it's the kernel. GNU is the operating system. You should give them credit like they are giving Linux credit. Without the GNU project Linux wouldn't be as popular as it is.
