GoinEasy9 made some good points. Most kernels, especially the new ones are built with driver support for most hardware. If the developers encounter such hardware, then they will create a driver for it in the kernel.

Your webcam, may not have been encounter yet, which is why your kernel can't recognize it. To be on the safe side, make sure your are using the latest kernel version which is 2.6.36 or 2.6.37. It is possible you need to enable the driver to be loaded within the kernel. Type modprobe in your terminal and see if you can find the driver that represents your webcam and un-comment the line.

Best solution, check the ubuntu forums for known hardware support.
