Help me ! Going to install linux on an old pc.
Fed up with viruses, antiviruses, windows and expenses,I'm thinking of installing linux on my pc with low-profile hardware. Please provide me the optimum distro that reinstalls life into my pc.
My needs :
1.Speed---fast opening & closing of ---folders,files,copying,deleting,pasting,processing,etc.
2.Crashless operation when multitasking---shouldn't get 'stuck' or become irresponsive for a long time to mouse/keyboard inputs when 3 or 4 applications run.
3.simple,minimal GUI environment---but visual effects like in windows 7/8 not needed at all.(only be able to have a desktop background)
4.Must run some educational softwares like matlab,circuit simulators,c++ compilers,etc besides normal applications like txt editor,playing music,games,browsing,pdf viewers,etc.
5.Games-supportive environment not needed at all.(if that strains the os speed)
6.Should detect pendrives,headphones,microphones,etc !
My system hardware :
1.512MB RAM (DDR 3)
2.Not sure if it has a graphics card or not.
3.90GB disk space.
4.AMD semdron processor.
Thats all !
So in short, what I want is a high-performance os that can co-operate with my low-end hardware. Also mention if one or many of my needs cant be satisfied or my demands are too high.

Your demands are too high. If we could have all this on an old computer who would want to buy a new computer?
Can you increase the amount of RAM?
You need a lightweight distro such as the ones at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightweight_Linux_distribution . Possibly something like Lubuntu - http://lubuntu.net/.

Have you thought about trying Lubuntu or Puppy Linux? They both use Openbox to manage windows (I think) and so it should be fast in that respect.
