Help with parallel to usb adapter connection issue in Mint?

I have a HP LaserJet 4MP with a parallel to usb adapter. The drivers I have been trying to use will only work with parallel (the original HP configuration). Windows OS creates a "virtual USB" port connect to and it works seamlessly. I am using Linux Mint which I love except for this connection issue. I have been through the CUPS, hplip (it gave me a lot of lip), and Ubuntu https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems all to no avail. If anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

While I haven't used the parallel to usb adapter, I would recomend using the hplip tools by themselves and letting them add your printer to CUPS. Seems like more people have success with hp-setup (run it with sudo) than doing it through the CUPS screen. Either way can get your printer functioning, but the raw HP tools seem to find devices better.
