How do I find out what linux version my system is running on?

I have a Moodle LMS running on linux server, I want to copy the moodle program and install it on an external drive to do some upgrades. I dont know the linux model on the server the closest I can get is a long addre in the LMS web server, but I can find it anywhere. Can I do the upgrades on a different version of linux and upload back to the original Linux

The output of:
lsb_release -a | grep ^D

should give you the brand and version of your distro. Example output:
Distributor ID: LinuxMint
Description: Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa
