How do I get a Windows 8 computer to talk to a SUSE 10.1 over Ethernet crossover cable?

At the moment I am not sure my SUSE instillation is correct as very old distribution DVD, so I am trying to link to the internet for updates or upgrades etc. Networking two computers of different platforms to get the access may not be the way to go for this, but running a cable to the router is also difficult and long term The two machines will need to be able to share information.
Would like to use WiFi connection of Windows 8 computer if possible via a short Ethernet cable, so far I have made a crossover cable and both machines see a link but Windows 8 is saying the IP address of the "unknown device" is not complete or something like that. How can I resolve this ?

If you are linking them directly with a crossover, try to set static IPs for...

If you are linking them directly with a crossover, try to set static IPs for both in the same network (ie both in the 192.168.1.X range)

That should at least get them to talk if the crossover is correct.

And hopefully this thread from an older Suse forum will help set that static IP:
