How do I open an expansion drive without formatting it?

I have a 500GB Seagate expansion portable drive, when I plug it into my laptop, it keeps asking me to format it. I have very important photo's on it and can't lose anything on it.

Is your laptop running Linux? If so, what flavor? Where did the drive come from? Was it used on the same system or another one? More details are need to diagnose the problem.

If it's been used on that laptop before and is now "unreadable", the first thing I would try is to boot the laptop with a version of Linux (with a live DVD or USB drive. Then plug the external drive in and let Linux mount it. Navigate to it in the file explorer and see if it's readable. If so, copy the critical file from the drive to a USB thumb drive or burn them to a CD-Rom ...
