Answer to the question

Majority of software programs are still compatible with Windows 7. You should look for OS compatibilty when you download installation setup files, most of the software manufacturers like Dell / HP / Lenovo provide this option to download drivers and other elementary utilites.

1 download the zip file and unpack it to a USB
2 follow the instructions to make it bootable then restart the laptop
3 you can select options to remember settings

First of all don't make fun of your laptop. I have a couple that benchmark less half of the new raspberry pi 2 credit card computer.

http://www.pendrivelinux.com/ will show you how to make a bootable usb pen drive for linux. Beginners like linux Mint. For a machine older than yours, Xubuntu might be bettter. Click on the From Windows tab at the bottom of the page for a long list of choices, make a choice, and following the link to further instructions.

Being familiar with Windows, you would want to find a distribution which has a similar feel to it. Such as Zorin or Linux Mint. One thing you will soon realize is Linux will run on many more systems than a recent Windows Operating System.
Regarding creating a live usb drive, each site has easy to follow instructions on how to accomplish this.
Good Luck and welcome to Linux!
