Generally this error message populates because you do not have an application associated to a specific mime type or the proper related application installed on your system.

If you can tell us what kind of file you are typing to open and what window manager (kde, gnome, xfce, etc...) you are using we can help you further.

1- this is like "Unknown file type" or "open with" in windows.
if you are opening a pdf file, use a pdf reader.
if you don't have one, install it.
2- what was your file extension again..? (these letters after the dot in filename)
3- could you please turn off the caps lock..?
4- when downloading a file, you better use "save" instead of "open", the system usually know what could open your files better than your browser..
5- I was born before the www, cheer up :)

Just as an example, if your trying to download or open up a pdf file, and your browser doesn't have an addon to do that, an error like that can occur. Besides the browser and file info that Manuel asked for, could you also include the name of the distro you are running, and whether it's a LiveCD or installed on your computer?
