hist ctrl-alt-F1 when it appears to stop and see if there is any output on that terminal. There may be an error displayed there. My best guess is that the laptop requires some driver that was not including the install disk's initramfs.
You may need to update the install CD your self, or install by some other means.

Also try minimal image, if you just need to make a quick test. Minimal is good as a full blown install, it only downloads more sw from the net but it's good enough to test your hw.
After this please post errors or steps to reproduce your problem, also try different command line options on boot to fix troubles (try with nousb, noapci and things like that)

It may be that the CD may have been burnt or downloaded poorly. Did you verify the CD? Have you run the live CD and does everything else work? Are you trying to install it on a separate partition, or, are you trying to install it using wubi? Does the hard disk have windows on it or are you trying to install Ubuntu on to the whole disk (If you have AV turned off, I'm assuming you have windows). How much room is on the disk? Maybe you can tell us a bit more. CD stops after you select "Installation" does not give us much to go on.
