Reset root password?

I am trying to reset my root password. The GNU GRUB version is 0.97. There is no option to press "e" nor "a" to edit.

RZJohn - My suggestion is to use an emergency Live disk to start the machine then mount the root filesystem of your OS. Then make a copy of /etc/shadow and edit it replacing the root password with the password of another user.

In the below example snippet, you can see that the 'rzjohn' encrypted password begins with $4 and ends with Yn0 . Once you copy that into the same field for 'root', and set the /etc/shadow permissions the way they were, you should be able to get into 'root' with the 'rzjohn' password.
