Is there a linux distro. that is kind of like windows gui?

i am building a computer for my father, and he has had little experience with computers, the only thing that he has used is windows, and i was looking to replace that with linux. but also wanted to make it easy for him to use. any suggestion would be helpful...

I have been working with Linux for may years now, I have played with a lot of different distro's and understand where you are coming from. You have reached a point where you are getting a little sick of Windows with all the prices, bugs and viruses. It is sure nice to start out with something that looks like what you where used to as you learn the differences.
I have not tried Zorin OS yet (downloading now) but it does look like a good choice. I use Ubuntu but is is not like Windows.
Keep in mind that these days when you boot from an install CD/DVD you are given the option to run it as a live CD. Meaning it will run from the disk and not install so you can see if you like the look and feel.

Try a few different ones and find the one you like then jump in

Zorin OS is a great option for you. It provides you multiple choices for look and feel, viz., Windos XP, Windows 7 and Zorin default. If you can play with linux then you can install Win-7 theme on your favourite linux distro but you need to be careful while configuring it.
If you want look and feel of Mac then you have a option of Pear OS.

Why r u comparing Linux with Windows !! They r totally different architectures and manufactured for different criteria. Linux is more protected from external threads and more secure than Windows. While Windows is less secured and any cyber-crime centric person can easily makes vulnerable whole on Windows OS (at least Desktop Versions).

If u really want to use Linux, then set ur mind to work with this wonderful OS and try to come out from Windows phobia. Basically Linux is used for Server and now in modern age the market ruler Desktop versions (Suse / Fedora / Ubuntu / OpenSuse / Mint etc.) r also very good and less command line utility rather than Gui based.

So, I am not going to recommended any specific distro, better read some good books / magazines related to Linux and take some training from an expert then try to do work on Linux OS. Afterwards, I am sure, u never try to find / ask this kind of Q.

Zorin OS may be a good candidate. It's not a Windows clone, but it's the best Windows(ish) Linux distro I've seen.
