It's pretty funny that you phrase the question the way that you did, because the two largest uses for Linux are for purposes outside of the desktop.

1) Linux is most popularly used as a server OS. It's either dirt cheap or free, and it's highly stable. Typically if you are running a server, you are using either Red Hat OS or CentOS, but there are many other server distobutions of Linux.

2) Android, the most popular mobile OS, is just a flavor of Linux ported for the cell phone architecture.
