I use a Dell Laptop Inspiron 6000, upgraded to 2GB RAM and 250GB HDD. Original OS was Windows XP. I believe that the D610 was released around within 1~2 years of each other.

I've been running Linux Mint (Gnome) 32-bit on this machine for more than 5 years. Last upgrade was to Linux Mint 14 (Xfce). Currently in process of downloading Linux Mint 16 (Xfce) 32-bit.

Hope this helps.

Most Gnu/Linux OS's are available on a Live CD or DVD. You can purchase them or download and burn them.

Then you can boot them and try them without installing anything on your computer. This is a great way to try them out and see what works best for you.

As for what is latest and greatest I seriously doubt you want that. That sort of thing is really very new, could have bugs and, more important to a new user, will not have an experienced user base for fast support if you need it.

The best route is to try nice stable releases from established distros. Debain, Fedora, OpenSuse for instance.

I also think that Mageia and Manjaro are, while young, suitable for the new user.

"Best" is a subjective term. It is what YOU like and which suits YOUR computer. How much RAM have you got?

What do you mean by by "tell about the very latest version of linux that came?"?
