What happens to the secret factory-fresh partition in Windows if I install Linux?

Will I still be able to use the key combination at startup to return to the original Windows settings, or does this facility disappear when I install Linux?

So long as you install Linux as a dual-boot system you should be fine. The various Linux distros are very good about sensing other partitions on the same drive(s) and leaving them alone. There is, of course, the obligatory caution that _anytime_ you do something as serious as installing an OS of any flavor that you back up anything you might need, personal files, whatever.
