Where do the 'program' files reside in Linux?

Where do the "program' files reside in Linux? A new program wants to know were to 'put' downloaded books to use with the program. I am not familiar enough to know.

Short Answer: as long as the program is asking you where to put these files ...

Short Answer: as long as the program is asking you where to put these files (books), it shouldn't matter where you put them. (I just REALLY wouldn't mess with /root if I were you) It should use these files just fine whether you put the books in /downloads, /documents, etc.

You *don't* want to put the books in the /etc/bin folder. It varies from...

You *don't* want to put the books in the /etc/bin folder. It varies from distro to distro, but you should have a "Documents" folder in your Home folder. /home/username/Documents. That is where you should have the app store the books.
