You should probably boot off another disk (like a live CD or a floppy) and then run the repair tool for your particular file system, probably e2fsck.

Bruce, that should do it. If there is a problem with the File System. If the files are currupted beyond your fs recovery tool's ability to fix it, youmay be out of luck.
