StarDict is a well thought out dictionary. Although XDXF is a standard open source dictionary format, StarDict uses the special StarDict format, which means it's not as easy to use if you're interested in integrating it with other dictionaries. On the other hand, it is straightforward to convert to and from StarDict format, and there are free converters available.

StarDict is easy to install and there are thousands of dictionaries available. There is no StarDict plugin for Firefox, so you need to switch back and forth between the two if you're going to look up words while surfing the Internet.
