LinuxCon, 20th Anniversary of Linux Celebration Kicks Off

Today is a big day for the Linux community. I’m writing this from Vancouver, B.C. where Users, SysAdmins, developers and business executives have gathered for the third annual LinuxCon and the official celebration of the 20th Anniversary of Linux.

This week is about celebrating as a community the accomplishments of the last 20 years and to collaborate on how we advance Linux for another 20 years. We’re lucky to have the foremost experts on these topics on hand at LinuxCon: Linux creator Linus Torvalds, Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst, legal authority Eben Moglen, IBM Linux leader Dan Frye and others. Renowned Internet and society author Clay Shirky will share how Linux and collaborative development have spread into other areas of culture and what that means for the future of technology.

These are just a few examples of the speakers and content we’re looking forward to today through Friday. It’s also a natural time to reflect on how Linux user behaviors have changed over the last two decades. My Highlights from the Newly Announced LinuxCon Schedule

Today we announced the full schedule for LinuxCon North America that will take place in Vancouver from August 17 - 19th. This year we had even more of a challenge than usual in putting together the program. Why? There were so many great submissions. (I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who submitted a talk and please don’t be discouraged if you didn’t make it this year. You had a lot of competition and we would love to see your submissions at subsequent events or in subsequent years. Check our events schedule for more events in Europe, Brazil and elsewhere.) This year is the 20th anniversary of Linux, which we have already been celebrating with a special video and contests. But this year’s speaker line up for LinuxCon will be a celebration on its own, with topics and speakers from across the industry, across the community and across the globe. While we do have a focus on enterprise Linux...

Open Compliance Training Helps Set-Top-Box Manufacturer Leverage Linux

At The Linux Foundation, we are lucky to work directly with many of the most innovative companies in the world. We all know the big names like Google, IBM and Intel but as Linux use has expanded into new segments - especially in the embedded industry - we get to work with smaller, but no less innovative companies. The best part is helping them make the most of Linux by getting involved in the community. As an example, we recently completed software compliance  and community involvement training at set-to-box manufacturer Altech UEC. We traveled to South Africa to help them understand how to deploy Linux and open source software to power their set-top-box technology. Altech made use of The Linux Foundation’s  Compliance Training resources to educate their developers and their executives on the process...
