Ted Kenney writes “F5 Networks, the industry leader in application traffic management, has chosen McObject’s tiny-footprint eXtremeDB in-memory embedded database on Linux to provide reliable, real-time data management within its BIG-IP product family of Internet traffic optimization devices.

eXtremeDB is part of the core technology in F5 Networks’ just-released BIG-IP version 9.0 local area application traffic management solution, and is built into additional services to be released in the coming year. Within the BIG-IP product family, eXtremeDB runs on Linux and manages data used for configuration and management of the product.

Incorporating eXtremeDB, rather than continuing to build data management from scratch, cut developer-weeks from the BIG-IP 9.0 product development and QA testing cycles, F5 Networks Senior Architect David Schmitt said.

F5 Networks’ selection of eXtremeDB highlights the customer value McObject delivers in its key target market of intelligent, network-edge devices. By combining ground-breaking performance with a tiny footprint, eXtremeDB enables devices to manage a growing volume of complex data while delivering the responsiveness, high availability and low development and manufacturing costs required for devices’ marketplace success.

F5 Networks is uniquely qualified to judge the growing array of databases and other commercial software aimed at streamlining development of network infrastructure devices. Gartner Group has termed the field of Web optimization products “the most dynamic†segment in the network infrastructure market, and repeatedly singled out F5 Networks for both its vision and its ability to execute in this area.

“As our products’ capabilities expand, building data management for critical functions such as configuration and routing is increasingly challenging. We determined that integrating a proven data management solution will shorten development and testing, cutting overall development costs. Our experience with eXtremeDB has borne out this prediction,†Schmitt said.

“When examining available databases, McObject’s eXtremeDB emerged as the best fit. It meets our performance, reliability and small footprint requirements, while offering additional developer benefits such as available source code, a flexible and efficient programming interface, and a powerful debugging environment,†Schmitt said.

“McObject is pleased to have been selected by F5 Networks. This new relationship points up the growing data management demands of cutting-edge network infrastructure, and the challenge for equipment vendors to either develop an in-house solution, or find a commercial database that meets their rigorous performance requirements,†McObject President Steve Graves said.

“By meeting these needs in an off-the-shelf package, eXtremeDB frees its customers to focus their development resources on other pressing challenges,†Graves said.
