Going forward that might be the situation in the desktop market but in the commercial markets, vmware will continue to rule. At the moment the freeware options are not as much mature as vmware and will take time to reach that stage. In the commercial segment, for production systems the corporates would prefer vmware than these freeware options. It's similar to the growth of RedHat Linux when loads of open-source linux options are available..
