Need tools for deaf person

Off the top of my head, I know only of text to speech translators. There are a few speech recognition softwares being developed, but I'm pretty sure that none of them have developed enough to convert speech to text yet (they're mostly for running commands on your desktop right now and they have to be trained to do so). Your best bet I would think would be to talk to someone at IBM, they have a product called ViaVoice (its not open source, but it only costs $40), and ask them if it can do speech to text. I have no idea if it can do it or not, but ask them anyways maybe they have a one-off project or something else. Hope that helps.

Sign language would be the best, but if that's not practical, then a face-to-face device such as the UbiDuo (www.scommonline.com) would likely work better than a speech to text device.
