Subject: tgz files?
I am new to Linux, I just got ubuntu. And I am trying to install Compiz, and AIM but they are only tgz files, but they just extract a folder full of stuff, I don't know how to install these files. Can someone help me please?

If you've extracted them, then there should be README and Install files in there. I suggest you begin by reading the first one. If you have Ubuntu 8.04 compiz is installed. You need to d/l from Synaptic Compizconfig setting manager to setup compiz how you want it.

The usual method to install a .tgz file is this(command line style): tar -zxvf filename.tgz cd filename ./configure make make install

if you have internet connection to the PC you have Ubuntu on, as evilc stated, installing via synaptec would be best as it takes care of dependencies sometimes not included in those files. otherwise, do what proopnarine linked. or for Compiz, you could probably swing by Debian's repository page and download the files there, as well as the dependencies listed.
