First if you are running windows Vista there may be a little difficult for you to do the installation, I will recommend to install windows XP first then Ubuntu since Ubuntu can be run side by side with XP. or just down load Ubuntu and install it complete and delete windows vista. I have Ubuntu I took windows vista out completely and I am very happy with the resolts, you have to be patience and down load all the plugs in and some of the coding for your Ubuntu to work perfect but it works very smooth a lot better than Vista and faster too. you can also request a free CD for Ubuntu by mail just go to www.ubuntu.com and in two weeks you'll get it. maybe this is the best to do because you can try the OS before you install it Vista will let you do it just put the cd in and click on it and run it you'll see what it does.
ubuntu 8.04 is the one you want very simple to use and you can do a lot of stuff with it
I hope this will work for you.

Pick a Linux version or versions you want to check out and go to the site. All of the instructions you need for their distro will be on that site.
Here is a link to a page that has a quick thumbnail synopsis of the most common versions and a link to each site.

If it ain't broke, you aren't trying hard enough.
