Which distro to choose

I have the following specs: Gigabute p35 ds3r Pentium core 2 duo 8200 1 gb ddr3 160 gb I am looking for a distro that will have rich GUI Please advice.

Also since i am new I need some help with the installation as I have 10 partitions and I want to have both win xp and linux distro (yet to be decided). So do let me know where I could get help on installing to ensure that the xp does not get correputed and still I am able to use the files on my drives.
