I'm not sure what you mean. If you have a video file called. video.avi, and assuming you have all the proper codecs installed to play it, you could play it using vlc by entering "vlc video.avi".

it would help if you share what distribution you use. If it's Fedora, most codecs can be installed from the Livna repository. If it's Ubuntu, codecs shouldn't be a problem at all. These issues vary from distro to distro and it's very difficult for people here to offer an exact solution if you don't tell us what distribution you use.

from what I know, vlc takes care of all codecs by itself. Maybe you installed some beta or devel version. Try to install one of the stable VLC versions using the Synaptic Package Manager. Remember to uninstall the existing VLC first.
whats with none of my programs reconizing extensions vlc can't do avi totem can't do any comix can't do cbr please help i want to keep da pengi
Do you mean when you are in a File Manager window and double-click on an entry with one of these extensions that they aren't recognized? Or are you saying that you are trying to invoke these programs from a command line and they aren't recognizing files with the above-named extensions?

Really. Thanks. I missed the posting date. Irritating indeed!
