Subject: A Legal Question...
If you were to look at my previous posts, you would know that I am very interested in developing my own Linux distribution. However, I do have a small legal question: if I were to roll my own Linux distribution from the kernel, or another distribution (I realize the legal situation might be different depending on weather I roll it from the kernel or a distribution), would I be able to distribute it, potentially for a small price, without having to pay the creators of Linux or the distribution I used? Obviously, I'd say "Based on <distro name>", but other than that, would I have to do anything? -- Arcelios

Well, assuming all of the software you are using is F/OSS, then: 1 ) Yes you would be able to distribute it. (even for a price) 2 ) No, you would not have to pay any royalties 3 ) You may have to change the name and/or logo, to differentiate between your's and their's (and avoid trademark infringement.)
