Hello. I recently learned what the skel directory is for, and I used it to create default desktop icons for new users on a Ubuntu 8.04 box.

However, I recently switched the computer to Active Directory authentication using the Likewise program. It works great. However, it seems that when domain users log in for the first time that the skeleton files I set up are not being created.

Does anyone know enough about skeleton files or Likewise to help me? I tried googling for a Likewise help forum but couldn't find anything.

I just wanted to mention that I did get that problem solved. Someone on a Likewise Open mailing list told me that I needed to make a small adjustment to a configuration file.

For the benefit of the linux.com community, the specifics:
Edit the file /etc/security/pam_lwidentity.conf. There is a line which reads: ";skel = /etc/skel". Uncomment this line by removing the ";". That every new user (who hasn't already had his home directory created) will have a copy of the /etc/skel files in his home directory.

Apparently, a number of problems with Likewise Open configuration can be solved by editing this configuration file.

I'm not sure how to point you to the Likewise-open-discuss mailing list archives (or rather, do not want to take the time to find out). Besides, it wouldn't tell you anything I haven't already mentioned.

I really appreciate Likewise-open, but it seems like they don't have any kind of advanced documentation for subjects like these. They have documentation, but it really only tells you how to go through the obvious steps inside the program GUI.

That's OK.

I'm sure as the project matures, and as interest in it increases, they would try and make more satisfying documentation. Meanwhile, this thread, is a good start :)
