Subject: x36 i386 etc
can anybody please explain what i386 and x36 means on distros. I am running mandriva on my desktop, but i want to try another distro on my laptop. I have been to a downloading site for fedora and it lists various downloadable distros but all have various tags at the end.. i.e ppc, x36, i386 many thanks

PPC is for MAC computers. x86 is for any computer like, 486,386,686 etc.... I386 is what most computers use unless you are running AMD 64 type for example. I am no whiz at this stuff.I just know what to pick for my stuff so it works. 32 bit i386 is usually a safe choice for used older hardware. 64 bit AMD 64 is for the newer stuff.

Yes, you can generally run i386 on any Intel or AMD-based machine. But, if you have a 64-bit machine, such as AMD-64 _or_ a 64-bit Intel machine, then you can use a 64-bit version of a distribution. I have mostly 64-bit machines, but run 64-bit Fedora on some of them, and 32-bit Fedora on others.
