Thank you so much sam, you are fantastic. I am on it now. But is there any way that this can automatically be saved in my computer to do all of this automatically, because when i turned off and back on i had to go into gnome-ppp and connect, then copy the primary DNS address and then do the whole terminal thing? Thank you :-) x

Im trying to find a way round this at the moment, The problem is when network manager connects to another connection i.e. wireless lan, it automatically writes over resolv.conf to set the DNS for that connection. If only 3G is used resolv.conf should remain the same even after reboot.

Has anyone tried to connect to 3G described at http://www.howtoforge.com/vodafone_mobile_connect_card_driver_linux cheers!

Elin Try "data.tre.se" And if *99# doesn't work, try *99***1# Hope this works

I have successfully installed gnome-ppp and also tried to connect using both *99# and *99***1#, plus changing the init 3 field to data.tre.se at the end. When getting to the 5th step "Set primary DNS" I found the following information in the log: --> Ignoring malformed input line: ";Do NOT edit this file by hand!" --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60 --> Cannot get information for serial port. --> Initializing modem. --> Sending: ATZ ATZ OK --> Sending: ATZ ATZ OK --> Modem initialized. --> Sending: ATM1L3DT*99# --> Waiting for carrier. ATM1L3DT*99# +CME ERROR: SIM PIN required --> Invalid dial command. --> Disconnecting at Sat Sep 27 21:53:22 2008 Since the sim card for the dongle is new my guess is that it needs to be locked up/activated before I can use it. Does anyone know how to this? Or if there is a way around it on my AA1. thanks [Modified by: elincecilia on September 27, 2008 10:06 PM]

I think I figured out a way to activate the card. I put it in a cellphone and entered the pin code. When putting the dongle back in the computer and rebooting I went through step 3 but when trying to 'detect' it tells me "No modem was found on your system". What am I doing wrong? Hi Elin You must be getting so frustrated by now! My sim did not have a pin code when i bought it, but i think what you need to do is put it back in the cell phone and remove the pin code completly. Also if you have access to a windows based system try the modem in there and see if it works. Sam

Just in case anyone is struggling, I bought the Aspire One last week and with limited linux knowledge I have unlocked the desktop functionality (which I'm really proud of!!) and installed cards, programs and additional hardware!! Its not that hard, nor as scary as it might first seem!! :-) What I did about mobile broadband is simply plug in my Orange Icon 225 usb dongle (whilst the One was on, btw!). The Aspire One sorted everything out for me, ok I don't have the Orange software, but I haven't needed it. Just switch on, plug in and I'm off... even on a train!!! I know I'll get tired of Linux Lite soon, but am using it as a learning curve so that I can load a 'real' version onto my big laptop soon :-)

CONFIGURING 3 MOBILE BROADBAND FOR LINPUS LITE (HUAWEI E160g) I've just got my 3 broadband dongle today and with help of the instructions posted on this forum have been attempting to install it. I have got to part 5 ie. "5.SET PRIMARY DNS" "Right click on the icon of two black screens at the bottom right of the desktop" However when I right click on this icon I don't get a "connection log" option. Although there is a box on the screen saying connected. Maybe I'm missing something. I would appreciate any help or advice. Thanks

I've managed to unlock the pin code and also to remove it. Now when trying to detect the modem in gnome-ppp, it tells me 'no modem was found'. When trying to connect it tells me again no modem was found and in the log I find the following text: --> Ignoring malformed input line: ";Do NOT edit this file by hand!" --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60 --> Cannot open /dev/ttyUSB0: No such file or directory --> Cannot open /dev/ttyUSB0: No such file or directory --> Cannot open /dev/ttyUSB0: No such file or directory Does anyone know what I need to do to get the gnome-ppp thing to find the modem again? I have a theory what might have happened... let me know if I'm wrong! When trying to unlock the sim card I plugged the dongle into another computer with windows xp and did the whole installation thing. After installing I still wasn't able to access the internet (my normal luck I suppose...) and I couldn't find a way to remove the pin code. Instead I unlocked it using a 3G cellphone. After I used the dongle (or tried to use it) on the windows computer gnome-ppp was no longer able to detect the modem? Either I broke it or it was broken when I got it........ ? I've been back to the store where I bought it and they have agreed to give me an additional week to try and get this to work before I need to return it to get my money back. So I'm not quite ready to give up yet! I need all the help I can get! Thanks!

Hi everybody. I have found this post essential for getting my AAO online the only problem i have had is getting onto hotmail, (it seemed to treat the laptop like a mobile handset). A solution i found in another forum was to change the line-- In init 2 field enter: ATZ In init 3 field enter: AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”three.co.uk” to In init 2 field enter: ATZ In init 3 field enter: AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”3internet” Hope this helps someone with the same problem as me (I'm a newbie too) By the way great work Sam ;-)

elin I don't think you have done anything to break the modem. When plugged in to a windows pc every thing should just install and work without problems. sound like a dodgy modem or sim! Sorry i can't help anymore Sam

I purchased an Acer Aspire One last Saturday and having previously read these threads, I was worried I wouldn't get my Three USB modem (E160G) to connect. However using WVDIAL logging in as SU the modem was found without any problem. A relief as I have no previous knowledge of Linux. I'm impressed with the computer and Linpus as an operating system. Seems ideal for the first time user to Linux. Does anyone know how I can use the webcam on internet social network sites? I've not been able to get it to work. Thanks.

Yep, I think I need to give up on this. Or buy a new modem. I've tried it with two other computers now, and I can't get it to work properly. Sam, thanks a million for all your help!!!! Without this forum I would have been completely lost.

Hi, I really hope someone can help! I've got as far as connecting but I can't seem to connect. My log says this: --> Cannot get information for serial port. --> Initializing modem. --> Sending: ATZ ATZ OK --> Sending: ATZ ATZ OK --> Sending: AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”three.co.uk” AT+CGDCONT=1,b [1d]IPb [1d],b [1d]three.co.ukb [1d] ERROR --> Bad init string. Any ideas anyone? It seems to be written correctly. I am tearing my hair out!

Tried to get irish vodafone E220 modem working on my daughters AA1. Followed all instructions but for username and password used vodafone and didnt edit init strings (Init 2 was ATQ0 V1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0). It connected fine and after setting primary DNS address I finally (after 2 weeks of reading posts on different websites and crying my eyes out) have got internet via vodafone modem. The question is: Have I done something terribly wrong and this will affect my monthly bill as I read in some forums that people got modems connected and internet up and running but then were hit with 300 – 400 Euro bills? Thanks for help. [Modified by: passerby on October 05, 2008 10:54 PM] [Modified by: passerby on October 05, 2008 10:57 PM]
