Hi everyone. I'm totally new to Linux and have been trying for over a week to get my Huawei E220 modem (On 3) to work. Tried following all of the instructions you have all very kindly provided on here but nothing would work.
Then this morning I have run a Live Update from the Settings tab on the Aspire desktop and a new piece of software called 'Mobile Partner' downloaded. I'm now very easily and very quickly using my USB modem to access the internet. Took a bit of trial and error but just if you would like to try, this is what I did.
Once you have run Live Update and downloaded the patch:
1) Shut down the Aspire
2) Plug your modem into the USB port
3) Switch on the Aspire
4) On the 'Connect' Tab click on 'Mobile Partner'
5) It should now detect the modem
6) Click 'Tools' 'Options'
7) Click 'New'
8) Give your profile a name
9) Select 'Static' under the APN tab
10) in the APN box enter three.co.uk
11) In 'Access Number' enter *99#
12) In 'User Name' enter three
13) Password is three
14) Authentication Protocol is 'CHAP'
15) Click 'Save'
After doing that I was able to connect from the 'Connection' tab at the top of the screen.
Very happy now :-)
Hope that helps those of you who are having problems getting it to work.
I couldnt not get my E220 to work on the AAO. I had seen two other methods on the net I tried and neither worked.
I decided to restore the SSD using the recovery dvd and use your method and it worked great.
One problem I did get is when starting Mobile Partner it detected the modem then it would say the device has been disconnected, then after a while reconnected, then disconnected and it kept doing this. I couldnt connect to the net.
I put the modem in my Windows XP laptop, ran the file on the modem called modem reset I think it was. I also upgraded the firmware to the latest which also enables support for 7.2Mbps and then plugged the modem back in the AAO and it all works fine now.
Firmware update can be found at: http://www.mobilebroadbandrocks.com/huawei-e220-firmware-11117090400-available

Can i just thank you all for that great sound advice, you have just saved me the £70.00 i was just about to part with to Three for one of there new routers that you plug your 3g dongles into.
great advice, as long as you download the updates and set up connection as detailed, the only other thing i needed to do was restart my aspire one after entering settings for them to take effect.
see below

Hi there
You should be able to download Mobile Partner from your updates under settings. There is a post earlier in this thread how to set it up. I also have a 3G dongle and it works perfectly 90% of the time.
Good luck!

Oh - I just realised you said you have no Internet so you can't download updates. You need to get to a wireless connection and download your updates.

Hi I've just found and joined this forum, being very new to Linux having bought the Aspire One from Tesco and a Huawei E160G three mobile broadband dongle from carphone warehouse last week.
I have followed the instructions above for updating and using the Mobile Partner which didn't seem to work, so followed the instructions for gnome-ppp, whereby I got a connection and was able to use both the browser and email client.
I then restarted the Aspire with the dongle disconnected and activated the wireless network and connected through my router to my home broadband network. Then disconnected the wireless, closed down and restarted with the 3 dongle connected. Mobile partner now justs locks up, gnome-ppp will not connect, so I followed the instructions to use wvdial. In both gnome-ppp and wvdial when I check the log the error is "no carrier".
I have since connected the dongle to my windows XP desktop and it works fine with a low strength connection.
I then connected it back to the Aspire One but still getting "no Carrier" error can anyone help please.

For all you people who have the E220 and have done what bunnyman said. ie update firmware and install mobile partner
If you still cant get mobile partner to work, i have worked out that if you boot up the system , you MUST go STRAIGHT to connect icons > mobile partner and then select your profile and connect it. You will get a 'detecting modem message and your modem will connect.
If before doing this, you go to the two icons with the computers and cross at the bottom of the screen, or the connection manager and click on any other connection at all or even the same connection you are already on, you will get a disconnected message appear. This effectively trips the modem and it will not function properly when you go to the Mobile Partner. You will then find the mobile partner detects the modem and tries to connect but nothing happens and the modem just flashes. This is because it has tripped and is now useless.
If this happens, simply pull the modem out of the usb port and put it back in again. Let the mobile partner detect the modem again and then select profile and then click connect.
Or reboot the system and go straight to mobile partner and select profile then connent.
To all those with NO INTERNET CONNECTION TO INSTALL UPDATES in the first place, find another pc with internet and go to
http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_one_110.html
and download the drivers and applications/ huawei081126.sh
this is 'Mobile partner'. save it to disk and then install it into your acer.
you also need to take your modem to another computer and update the firmware from mobile broadband rocks as above, I used a vista PC to do this and it worked fine. Xp works as well.
Run the reset prog in the modems files awell, just in case, then stick the updated modem back into your acer with mobile partner installed.

Hi.
I have tried everything on here to get my E156G to work on my Acer. Now 5 hours on and still unable to connect.
Most recently I reset the modem via a Vista PC (that was fine) and tried everything again and still nothing. I noticed that when I querried the dongle on Linux it came back as a E220 although it says E156G on the dongle itself. I tried everything posted on here for all versions. Did notice that the DNS server settings don't change when I close the terminal windows down as went back in and it reverted back with the primary and secondary DNS entries whereas I prevously deleted them as per one set of instructions.
I configured all the settings for the below title from Sam posted and tried everything else. Anyone got any other suggestions as I am outta ideas on trying to get this to work.

Ok found this on another forum, just tried it and it finally works :
Aspire One with 3 using a E169 3G Modem
This system is up and running:
Firstly, use a wired Internet connection to make sure you have installed all the latest updates, that at this time include updates for the Huawei E169 3G modem currently used by Virgin Broadband, e.g. go to Settings and then run Live Update.
Having done that, click the arrow to display all the standard applications for Connect.
Double-click the Mobile Partner icon.
Select the Tools menu then Options. In the left-hand side selection box, Profile Management should be highlighted.
Click New and give an appropriate Profile Name such as 3 UK
Under APN select Static and enter the APN: 3internet
Under Authentication, the Access Number should already be showing *99#
leave the the username field empty
leave the the Password field empty
Under Authentication Protocol Settings, select PAP and then save the settings.
Once it is setup, from within Mobile Partner, ensure the appropriate profile is selected and click Connect.
Once a connection has been established, minimize Mobile Partner, e.g. don't close it!
You can now start browsing the Internet, making Skype calls, etc
That's it. As long as you have the recent updates installed, its even easier to setup the Linux Acer Aspire One for 3 Broadband than it is to install and set it up for Windows or Mac.

Hi all!
Im yet another novice at Linux.
Ive been trying to get mobile broadband installed and have so far been unsuccessfull, after trying o2. I also contacted all the other network providers of which none seem to be linux friendly! Also the modem recommended to get was the e220 from 3 mobile, which unfortunately my local 3 mobile shop no longer supply.
After much reading through the posts on these pages ive noticed alot of people have successfully set up a connection on the 3 mobile broadband.
Also checked on the driver downloads from the acer site using the link shown on one of the replys, ive noticed that this link goes to the page for the AA1 110.
Ive purcheased the AA1 150 and cant see a patch for 3 mobile.
Can anyone help me out , is there anything out there for the AA1 150 to help connect to 3 mobile broadband?

Hi
If you do your updates, you should find a piece of software called Mobile Partner. If you go back through this thread, there are plenty of posts to tell you then how to set it up. You will need to access a wireless network to do your updates obviously, but after that you should be able to use the dongle without any problem.
Good luck!

I have a Sprint Sierra Wireless USB modem and I just got the Linux setup pdf from them today. Here is a link to it:
http://www4.sprint.com/pcsbusiness/downloads/Sprint_Mobile_Broadband_Setup_Guide.pdf
On Page 4 it goes into how to setup the usbserial device using modprobe. There is a table of Sprint's modems (3 are USB devices). Note that you will need your device's vendor and product ID codes. I have tested this on my system, and it gives me a good PPP connection to the internet with my Sierra AC595U modem. I hope this helps.

Hey peeps!
Ive downloaded the update patches on my AA1 150! Got the 3g patch and a couple of patches on Huawei. Now when i plug in my E156 in the connection manager it shows 3g network (shadowed text) and an auto connect function for the dongle. Unfortunately none of them work and it just flashes up network disconnected.
Ive read through alot of the threads, and judging by it so far it appears they are all centered around th AA1 110 model, am i right? Is there a difference between the running of the AA1 110 and the AA1 150? I cant seem to find the software entitled Mobile Partner!
Double checked on my live updates and the unit is fully updated!
Seems im half way there but not quite able to get any further.
If anyone can assist me using some simpilar terms or by detailed walk through i would realy appreciate it.
Im away for the next couple of days and will be taking the unit with me but will only be able to connect in Wifi areas!
If anyone can help me please email me at rossk27@o2.co.uk
Ill be able to retreive your mails and respond to them using my phone which would be far easier and quicker if im unable to access the internet.
Hope to hear from someone soon
Ross

All forums seem to say 'Right click on the icon of two black screens at the bottom right of the desktop and then click 'connection log''
I have tried this but when I click on the screens (That I think are being to reffered to) my only choices are 'prefrences' or 'about', no 'connection log'.
Does anyone know of another way to set the DNS?

Edit /etc/resolv.conf and put the server IP address for your preferred DNS server at the top of the list.

Rubberman, Thank you for getting back to me. I have tried the command "/etc/resolv.conf" and all I'm getting back is permission denied. should I be doing something else?
