Fedora is not as user friendly as Ubuntu, especially for beginners.
The way Ubuntu handles software installation (package manager) is, in my opinion, much better than Fedora's. Ubuntu uses debian (deb) package system, Fedora uses RedHat (rpm) package system.
I think Mandriva is a much better rpm distribution than Fedora. You should also try Ubuntu. In the end it's all about personal preferences.

I use either Fedora (8 and 9) or Kubuntu on all my machines. I find it very difficult to say that one is superior to the other. I like Fedora because it presents a lot of bleeding edge programming and server updates compared to Ubuntu. But Kubuntu is a very easy installation, and easy to maintain. And in my opinion, updating by yum is just as easy and efficient as it is by Ubuntu's version of apt.
