I'm trying to install ubuntu and the automatic partitioning is failing. I have tried manual but have absolutely no idea about these partitions. Could use some advice. Mary

Any of thse details would be helpful: - How many hard drives do you have? - What kind of computer is it? - Are you trying to install only Ubuntu, or are you keeping a Windows installation on as well? - What did it say when it failed (what was the error message? - Which version of Ubuntu? - Any thing you know that is special about your computer or hard drive setup

I have a Dell Dimension 3000. I have been unable to reinstall Windows XP. I thought I would try Linux. I have one hard drive 160 GB and am only installing Ubuntu 8.10. I can use Ubuntu from the live CD but cannot install. The message is partition #1 of scsi 1(0,0,0)(sda_as ext 3 failed. Have tried partitioning manually several times but really don't know what I'm doing there. Marypat
