Subject: Seagate Free Agent Go Portable Hard Drive fails to mount
I'm trying to get this to work with my Acer One laptop (running Linpus) but it's failing to mount looking around I think it's in NTFS format but this means nothing to me other then it can be changed? It works fine with XP but not Linpus, if possible I'd like it work on both, mainly so I can transfer these files over. Any idea on how I can fix this? Cheers in advance :)

There are a couple of ways to approach this. First, do you want to access the drive from Windows as well as Linux? If so, you will need to leave the current format alone and ntfs mount the drive. Depending upon the age of your OS, you might need to download the ntfs-3g drivers in order to get full read-write capability. This has to be mounted as root (at least I have to on my CentOS system), but it works just fine. If you aren't interested in Windows access, then you can reformat the drive. You need to su to root, or log in as root, run fdisk on the drive's base device id (/dev/sdx where sdx is the device seen), change the partition type to Linux, and then initialize (format) the partition (/dev/sdx1) with the desired linux file system type such as ext3. Now, presuming you are using it as a USB drive, Linux will see/mount it when you plug it in.

Sometimes real fast is almost as good as real time. Remember, Google is your friend!

Linpus is based on Fedora 8. I think you do need ntfs-3g. To install it, you must first enable the advanced mode of the OS. http://www.laptopmag.com/advice/how-to/aspire-one-apps.aspx http://www.fedorafaq.org/#ntfs

Right, I feel really foolish as I followed the instructions here and did this previously Now they don't make any sense as I had to re-install Linpus.. For some reason I don't understand whats being said.. I'm planning on keeping the Hard drive to be read by my windows computer and linux gonna try work out what was said but could someone simplify this for me? I really don't get how I understood it before hand :S I have ntfs-3g drivers installed The Freeagent drive is being picked up in my file manager but it wont mount What would be the next step? I'd rather not have to re-format the hard drive as I'm also about to re-install Windows
