Hello, I just recently installed Ubuntu Linux on my PC and I was wondering what types of sound and video cards are compatible with Linux?

I usually recommend that you find the hardware you want to use and then check the manufacturers' web site for Linux support and drivers. If they don't, then check in the listings above and do some Google searching. If you can't find drivers with some indication from users that they work well, then check out something else. FWIW, some hardware manufacturers will provide open sourced drivers for Linux that may or may not be good. Others provide closed-source drivers for Linux that are very good. For example, I use an nVidia 8800GT card for my 64bit Linux system. The nVidia driver is closed-source but works really well - I get full screen, full motion video at 720p on dual 24" wide-screen 1920x1200 displays, each display showing a different video clip with no noticeable glitches. Of course, I have a very fast multi-core system to handle the processing and I/O. But, the fact that a single video card can handle this much processing speaks well for both the card and driver. Using the default drivers for Linux on the same card I can't even get 1 full-motion half-screen video to run smoothly - that's the difference the proper driver can make.

Sometimes real fast is almost as good as real time. Remember, Google is your friend!
