Is there any disk management program out there thats opensourced or freeware that will defrag my disk while moving the files all to the front. I think i have found out that my files are scattered throughout the disk, so when i go to shrink my vista partition, it only says i can shrink by 89Mb, when there is over 100Gb of free space. Thank you for your help in advance.</div>

As far as I know the filesystem and journal also take up some room.

If you're running ext2 and ext3, when the filesystem was installed on your hard drive, by default it reserves 5% &quot;for the root user.&quot; In 7 years of running Linux, I have never needed this nor figured out its purpose (other than theoretical - a system that won't boot because of no HD space). Anyway, you can specify -m 0 with the mke2fs command next time you wipe that partition.

Anyway all of this could be using up that space; I doubt most of that could be explained by fragmentation unless you are using a very large block size. </div>

first off, i dont have linux yet. I am trying to get it but I cannot free up enough space from my vista partition to do it. Next, I have done research online and the only thing that I can find wrong with my computer is that when I go to shrink the vista partition, vista can only see as far into the disk as the last file (usually largest files). My vista-re-size tool can only see 89Mb of free space to turn into unused partition, but it also says that of the 220Gb, only 120Gb is used. I've come to the belief that my files are scattered all around the disk instead of being all at the beginning of the disk like any human would organize it. I just need to move the files with a third party program so that vista will see the true 100Gb free space. I just want recommendations for programs if anyone has any? Thanks again. </div>

so I did a manual defrag with diskeeper, but instead of opening up space, it took it all away. There is a lot more defragmented files/folders than before which I can see by analyzing the disk, but when i go into vista, I can't shrink the partition at all. </div>

I believe that the commercial version of Partition Magic will move data on an NTFS partition and allow you to shrink it accordingly. Unfortunately, Windows cannot move some files while the system is in operation.<p class="hiddensignature">
