I'm new at Linux but have managed to successfully install Fedora 7 on one PC, and Ubuntu 8 on another. My question, however, has to do with finding a wizard which allows new users like myself, to easily install drivers, applets, etc. without having the steep unix learning curve; I just don't have the time to learn a new "text command" interface. OK Joe, I am in a similar boat as Whoknew and frankly, I don't understand your answer. I feel like I am missing a few steps of knowledge here. It's a problem I encounter frequently, with more experienced Linux users assuming newbies know more than we do. So help me out here... I'm practicing on the Stone Soup file. I've downloaded it, it's on my computer. I have unzipped it (is that the same as decompressing?) with an extracting program that comes up automatically when I double click on a package after I download. I opened it in the default file - the download file on my desktop. The option you offer is "decompress with this command..." Are you talking about the using the terminal? But I'm guessing my program does it for me. Next you say "tweak the makefile..." What is a makefile? Where do I find it? How do I tweak it? "...to make sure the platform (my operating system?) and directory selections are correct for your distro" Oh hell, you've lost me now. Are you saying the distribution (version?) of my game will make a difference? Are you implying I can change the directory to make it work on my "distro"? How would I do that? How would I know I need to tweak anything? Where would I go to do this? Enter make - Where? How? Root sounds like a file...I'm aware you can look at files in the terminal but not experienced at this. What is the exact syntax? (Not a word I'd need in windows - I learned it playing muds) I think you get the picture. It's a long process for Win/Mac users to switch to an interface that doesn't do everything graphically. I get frustrated going on irc groups when people mock newbies and send us to places where the answers don't seem to be connected to the questions. I find intro to Linux tutorials, but when we get to the terminal, there seems to be a communication breakdown which doesn't convey the purpose of the different commands in simple terms. I suppose Linux diehards are resistant to using terminology that would help GUI users make the bridge from Windows but it might help to make comparisons. For instance - "Unzipping files use these programs: xxxxx. You can download them in your synaptic package manager." Then I'd need to get some of these in between steps like maybe "Open your terminal. (Applications>Debian>xshells>Gnome Terminal) To decompress or "unzip" a file enter this command "xxxxx". Open the downloaded game folder. Look at the file names "install" Just an example. I know it seems tedious but LInux users are so enthusiastic, I'm sold on many aspects of the Linux but someone needs to write down these little steps somewhere for the absolute neophyte. Maybe someone has. Point me in a direction. Toni
