I found some instructions a few months back on how to sync my Nokia N81 to Goolge Contacts. The reason you would do this is because Nokia don't produce software to backup your phone in Linux, so bar a few third party options you're kind of stuck.
Luckily, Nokia supports SyncML as well as Google Contacts, so it's a fairly trivial process to get them working with each other, without Exchange or any other 3rd party software. It's just that I can no longer find the link, so the following is some tidied up instructions I sent over IRC, so I don't have to do it again.

lftp is a powerfull FTP client than can be used to sync with a remote account. In Ubuntu 9.04 it is already installed so all you have to do is figure out how to use it. :)
First, you'll need 2 "scripts", one to download files from the remote FTP server to your computer an one to upload them from your computer to the server.

Ok linux.com, you've been reborn for roughly 24 hours so I've got a monster challenge. I challenge the linux.com community to solve the iPhone/linux sync problem without jailbreaking my phone. There may be a monetary reward to someone for solving this challenge. See below for my fine print regarding the rewared. And nobody tell me it can't be done, we all know nothing is for certain when it comes to computers. Heck, I'll even offer up one solution for someone to persue: start a petition to Apple to create iTunes for linux. See was that hard?? So what are you waiting for, get to it!
That is all.
