Can someone please recommend a good portable linux that can be carried around on a flash drive. I also don't want it to install anything on the the computer concerned. It also has to be free (eg. not Mandriva Flash)

I think u better try fedora live usb

Go here...has all kinds of distros that can be run from a USB thumb drive, and instructions for how to install them.
I myself have installed sidux 2009-1 Ouranos onto a usb stick 4GB. The live cd has a great usb installer. Just boot up the live cd and go to install as you would any other distro, but pick install to usb. Remember also that if you add persist to the installation you can modify your install, do updates, and, it will retain everything.
Just one more: if you are using Ubuntu on your desktop you can use the "System > Administration > USB Startup Disk Creator" option to generate a USB stick image.
Note that the stick is generated from an ISO that youselect during the process.
