Thanks for the opinions, I'm running a software raid 1 between each of the drive pairs. I'll probably end up backing up the data on smaller pair and attempting the software raid between the two operating systems and report back here to see what happens.

Hello world.

I am not only a total newb to linux, but to computers in general past being an end user. besides taking up computer science as my second major so that i can learn as much as possible, i am making it a point to read books and joining internet groups.

All have pointed to linux.

I would like some opinions of how much potential my first apple machine has with linux. specs are as follows:

-Apple G4 Powerbook Titanium
-667mhz processor
-256mb ram
-optical=combo (cd/dvd-r, cd-rw)
-60gb hd
-pc adapter card slot
-no wifi
-usb and firewire.
-OS X (10.2.8)

i am getting the faulty optical drive replaced for under 200 bucks, and could upgrade the ram to 1GB for another 100 or so.

in my dreams, i would like to someday build an OS from the ground up, just to learn how its done. but thats some time away. my question is whether or not this hardware is viable for linux (slide!!!) and if so what kind of applications. I hear old (p)pc's are great materials for making servers, for example.

please remember that i am a total newb. i am just now learning how to get around on linecommands (terminal). basic stuff like "man", "pwd, ls, mkdir" and so forth. i have no real programming language experience or knowledge, other than having written the "hello world" program in ruby.

thanks ahead of time for your help

ps- this isnt my only machine by the way. I have an imac, a macbook, and am about to purchase a new macbook pro in a couple of weeks. the g4 powerbook is going to be strictly a "project and learn" machine. thanx,

I am thinking about this a little more. Is your bootloader set to go to the intended boot entry by default (the one you enter into manually), or could it be trying to enter and invalid boot entry?

If you right click on the network manager applet and click on connection information it will give you the basic connection information as shown below.

And if you go to system -> Administration -> System monitor you can view the bit and transfer details as shown below.

Well, if there is no disk light activity, fsck has a problem. Have you tried doing an fsck from terminal? I think it's strange that if you don't wait for the timeout in grub that it boots, but doesn't otherwise. Try (as root) "fsck /dev/sda3" without quotes, and see if it blows up from terminal. I'm assuming sda3 is your root, let us know. If it's not root, what is it?

Here it is what I think about the situation.

I'm sure, I haven't got any problems with BIOS, the motherboard or other hardware. Also, I think that the problem is in the fsck utility. It seems, it can't perform an HDD check. Early when I started my system, fsck worked correctly and performed the check regulary after 26 system boots. It said something like /dev/sda3 was mount 26 times without checking, bla-bla-bla, check forced after that it showed me a progress bar and I could see the progress of checking.

Now the situation has changed. I push the “Power” button, the system starts, I see the boot operation sequence on the screen and sometimes when the boot process goes to the “Checking file systems…” stage the system just hang. The HDD's led is off and it doesn't blink . The system is in that state five, ten, fifteen minutes and nothing happens. I push the “Reset” button, the system reboot and if I push the “Enter” key in GRUB the system boot without problems, “Checking file systems…” returns some info that I think relevant to the last successful check. But if I don't push “Enter” the system hangs again.

I have to notice also I performed partitions size change about month ago. I reduced the partition where the root directory was and increased the partition with the “home” directory. I performed this operation booting with Ubuntu live CD and using the GParted utility. Partition size changing completed without any errors or warnings.

Actually the disk check is based upon the filesystem, not the distro. If you are using ext3 or ext4 that is probably the reason for the apparent stall.

I was a Debian user for many years. Debian sets a disk check after you boot up a partition after a certain number of times. I used Debian sid which allowed you to see what was happening during the boot, i.e., during the boot scroll. After 30 or so boots, Debian would perform an fsck (disk check), which, depending on the size of the partition, could take from 5 to 20 minutes. This could be what is going on. You boot isn't actually frozen, it's just checking the disk partition.
One simple way to check is to look at the disk access light on you computer. If it's constantly on, or on and flashing, it is probably performing that disk check. It shouldn't happen every boot, and, whether you hit enter or let it time out during grub shouldn't make a difference.
Let us know if you see that disk light flashing or not during that time, and, let it sit and finish (even if it takes 15 minutes). If you allow it to finish, it may not hang again for some time, or whatever your disk check is set for.
One can always extend the amount of time that the disk check is set for, but, lets see if that's what is happening first.

Partition Encryption

Since I am an avid Slackware and CLI user, I cannot comment on graphical encryption tools and I cannot write a guide better than the one I learned from, so I will refer to it.

The guide in the following link is included in the root directory on all Slackware disks and explains pretty well how to make pretty well encrypted partitions on your system via command line using cryptsetup.
ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackware/slackware64-13.0/README_CRYPT.TXT

The guide at http://maarten.lippmann.us/?page_id=116, explains to how create static and dynamically sized virtual partitions, after these are built you can apply the cryptsetup methods from the Slackware guide to make them encrypted for personal information in which you can open them only when you need to.

If the partitions are setup properly and the software is seperate then you should not have any issues running the software raid.
I wouldn't be so fast to make that assumption. A lot depends upon the level of raid being used. My best guess is that mirroring would work ok, but striping probably not since other than using the concept of parity, there is no standard for what parity computations are used, how the data is striped, etc.

I know you have probably used the guide that arochester used, but here is some information anyway. Most DSL internet connections are run through a modem/router that you keep at your house/business, any computer that connects to that router in then connected to your local area network and does not need additional software to connect to the internet.

Once your system is connected to the router via wired or wireless connection you only need to go into the gnome-network-manager to choose which connection you want to use and the option for the network device if necessary.

Hi.

Last time my system starts to hang on boot. It occurs while the "Checking file systems..." process. I noticed that it happens only when I wait established time in GRUB. If I press the "Enter" key in the GRUB menu the system will boot without any errors.

What is the reason of the bug? How can I fix it?

Thanks.

When explaining issues please explain exactly which components/applications are effected by the specific problem.

I would like people to share some useful iptables configuration options that you use and explain their functionality. The sharing of this information can be used to teach others about functions that they may not be aware of and it will help to community by showing just how shared/open information increases security.

I will post some of my options and functions later tonight after I sort through my large modular script.

Those files are the boot instructions, kernel image and the virtual disk(s) that hold your ubuntu installation. In the wubi installation the files are not written to a new partition, but are written to the virtual disk file(s) that are stored on your C: drive.

Now if the ubuntu physical partition was used then you may have installed two occurances through seperate install attempts, one as a physical install and the other as a wubi installation. Buy removing the files and the partition then you would be removing both installations of ubuntu and all data that resides within those installation.

You can safely remove all of the wubi and ubuntu files and remove the ubuntu boot entry. But by removing these files the ubuntu boot entry will not work and you will loose all access to your previous ubuntu installation.

Feel free to report back and ask questions when you are willing to allocate some time to fully installing and distro. Who knows, we may help you find some functions that will make you question ever going back to windows ;)

If you are still seeing an ubuntu option after running the fixmbr command then that means that the entry is in the windows bootload, that is an effect of using the wubi installer. If it was indeed installed by wubi then you should bee entries on your C: drive that are called wubi* or ubuntu* that are your actual installation.

To completely remove a wubi installation you first need to delete the wubi and ubuntu files from your C drive, then you right click on the my computer icon, go to properties, click on the advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery settings button, under System Startup click Edit, and in the open boot.ini file you can remove the ubuntu option from the windows bootloader.

Now this thread is quite informative since I have covered the uninstallation of ubuntu from both a wubi and physical installation.

As always please respond with any additional questions or issues that you have.

Good catch seeing my typo.

I don't think that your router has been compromised, I would recommend trying to capture some of the questionable packets to analyze their structure to see if they all have the same contents or if the data changes. The UDP flood may be the result of an attempted denial of service attack or maybe even the result of an error on an outside connection, packet analysis can help you to identify the cause and potentially modify your firewall rules to discard those packets.

I've been on other forums that have tried to incorperate chat into their forums, the responses were not always pleasant. The biggest issue was that all help and conversations in the chat were not recorded for future use. I would recommend looking at setting up webpage based IRC client for the users and using an IRC channel, this can help you because you can record all activity in the IRC channel and archive it on your site for future use.

Hi, Thanks for your response, just a quick correction on your reply:

2009-11-19 09:50:53 - UDP Flood - Source:192.168.1.3
,57285,LAN - Destination:194.168.4.100,53,WAN

The destination is a 194 not a 192 subnet,

My external IP currently is 77.101.212.219

My Router primary DNS is 194.168.4.100 which matches the Destination address and its always port 53, which you would expect.

The router internal address is 192.168.2.1

DHCP is delivering an IP address range of 192.168.2.100 through 192.168.2.200

So it makes no sense to me, Could my router be compromised somehow?

Regards

Hi all,

In my company, the storage guys are going to perform EVA upgrade on their SAN device and they have requested us to change the disk timeout on the Linux systems. We have RHEL5 as well as RHEL4. By default in RHEL5 its 60. We are looking at changing it in RHEL4 (which is using both Emulex and Qlogic cards)

We have tried the below steps (We want this setting to be persistent)

*) lpfc_linkdown_tmo  -> no luck
*) nothing specific found on the udev rules file for the timeout. (which was there in RHEL5).

Using rc.sysinit i think we can do it? but is it recommended.

Please help.

Cheers

Things to do after installing Ubuntu? I think don't need install some additional programs. On laptop I'm using ubuntu and I just installed VLC media player and MonoDevelop. VLC media player is best media player under Linux platform for me and MonoDevelop I installed because I need it for programming .net apps under Linux platform. :)

The issue I see is that the traffic is coming from a 192.168.1.X subnet and going to a 192.168.4.X subnet. That really doesn't make sense since you are running on a 192.168.2.X subnet.

It sounds like it is receiveing misaddressed packets from the outside connection. Can you confirm the port(s) that have been receiving those packets, your outside connection IP address and the subnet group used on your outside connection to see if the addressing corresponds?

I am moving this post to the Ubuntu section so their pros can try to help you.

It sounds like your system may be having a conflict trying to figure out which sound card to use. I don't know if ALSA is used in ubuntu 9.10, but you can try to run alsaconf in a terminal to tell the system which sound device to use.

Per my understanding standard audio output through the headphone jacks is one-way communication. However if you plug headphones into the jack on a set of speakers it's the speaker's internal controll that is re-routing the audio. In the case of your setup the speakers are getting the audio via one-way communication from the jack on the back orf your computer and the headphones are receiving their audio from the jack on the phone of the system. The two jacks are taking the same audio but sending it down two sperate channels that do not communicate.

I do not know of a way to auto mute the audio in this case because they are being routed through seperate channels that do not pass data back to the system for connection verification. There may be a command-line script you can run to disable a specific port, but that you have to be manually triggered.

I am responding with my best thoughts about this, but I may be incorrect, I am hoping someone can pitch in and prove me wrong.

This is a great list. I saw it on digg when it first came out and shared it all over the place.

If you can, also write stuff about "mod"ing your Ubuntu, like... "10 things to do to make your Karmic an awesome office/work machine", or "gaming rig", etc... Like altNull said, there are SO many packets out there that sometimes it's hard to know where to go and what to do. This style of tutorial, for me, is the clearest, easiest way to learn.

2009-11-17 19:53:00 - UDP Flood - Source:192.168.1.3
,58393,LAN - Destination:194.168.4.100,53,WAN

How come the source is 192.168.1.3?

The Destination is my ISP DNS server I guess

I hope someone can explain whats going on,

P.S. I don't run an internal DNS Server.

Can somebody please give me a very basic walk-through on how to get this to work?! I'm desperate, I will mail you $1 if you can help!! :)

In that case what you need to do to uninstall ubuntu is:
1. delete the ubuntu partition(s)
2. then boot up your window rescue/recovery disk/partition and go into recovery mode, once in recovery mode you need to run the command "fixmbr", that command will remove the ubuntu bootloader and reinstall the windows bootloader.

If you are looking for a quick fix then you can just overwrite the mbr now and then delete the partitions when you need the space.

If you install didn't even get far enough in the install process to add the bootloader, then all you need to do to remove it is delete the ubuntu partition(s).

Google is a great tool, however not all users are proficient at using the advanced seach options. Normally the results of vague searches further confuses the users, and in the case of a potential switch to a Linux based Distro the user can become frustrated with Google and consequently with Linux based Systems because of the difficulty they have finding information.

I welcome this dicussion to continue and if the need arrises then we can help others to learn to use google more effectively.

I repair friends computer. If they are gamers I have to push them to Windows 7 since Vista is unsecured, and Linux can't support all of the Games they play (well it can, but you have to be a wine nut like me). If I find out the computer is used for school work, email, or web surfing, then I bump them to Linux right away. Usually I select Ubuntu for its support of a bunch of fun apps and the graphical installer. However, I really suggest Fedora since its more hardy, faster, and more secure. Problem: You do have to learn to use and love bash...wait that's not a problem. Lol.

Really, Windows 7 days are numbered. They rely on the x86 architecture, which has been maxed out on current processors. In order to keep moving forward, Intel and AMD will release Power PC architecture or another architecture which will allow them to pump out more powerful processors without paying through the nose for materials or construction. This, for Linux and Unix, simply means a recompile and tests of apps. For Windows, this means DOOM. They can't simply recompile. Since the kernel is written in C/C++ and C# they can't recompile in another architecture since C# is built around the x86 architecture. This means a complete rewrite of their compiler and then they have to rewrite the .Net framework and then they can try try try to recompile. That or they would have to write a new compiler and a new OS. Wait, that's about the same amount of work.

Examples of this can be seen in the PS3 vs Xbox360. The 360 relies on x86 architecture, while PS3 is PPC. Which has more power and performance? PS3 by a ton!

Basically, Linux and Unix just need to push for PPC.

Yeah, I had a similar problem with an Intel on-board video chip, but for me the solution was easier: I just swapped out the motherboard. Good thing I had the other board and the knowledge to swap!
Incidentally, XP (Nova Logic) games had problems with that video chip, too.

pthread_mutex_lock() call never returns causing other threads to wait
for gaining its lock forever in turn causing 100% cpu load. I have tried
using alternate call pthread_mutex_trylock() which try to lock and if the
mutex is locked in some other thread it returns with an error code.

The above mentioned call pthread_mutex_lock is used in an application which
goes to full cpu load once mutex blocks forever, and even if i kill the application
and restart it, it will again go to full cpu load, the problem of full cpu load only gets
resolved when i restart the machine, is there any other alternate call or any other
possible solution for this problem.

Barry
See if you can locate the nvidia-settings app and run it and see if you can adjust the settings. If that doesn't help it may have not been installed correctly, or, the xorg file might need to be adjusted.
Let us know what happens.

Tom

Edit: sorry, it's under the system tools in fedora, if I can get into my Ubuntu install later, I'll tell you where to look. It can also be run in terminal by typing "sudo nvidia-settings" (without quotes). It will even write a new xorg for you when you save it.

2nd Edit: Since I have Ubuntu running in KVM I can't install the nvidia graphics drivers, hence, I can't tell you where in the menu the nvidia-settings app can be found. But, in Applications-->Ubuntu Software Center if you type nvidia-settings into the search box, it does come up and is available. Once again, if you need more help, just ask.

Under these drivers, my screen is not being detected properly. it's being detected as an unrecognised screen only 640 pixels high. The result is that everything is being displayed six times on my screen.
I'm gonna go and see what I can find out about this now. any suggestions are much apperciated.

I was searching on the internet about porting applications from Mac OS X to Linux, and I saw that there was a project called Cocotron (http://www.cocotron.org/), which aims to implement Cocoa frameworks completely so that porting apps from Mac OS X to Windows or Linux would be as simple as a recompile.

What I'm wondering is if there is something similar for Carbon? The Carbon API is used in many, many, many applications and it would be great if there was a way to take that code and just recompile it to the Linux target.

The SMB or Samba service sets your system up to share directories and printers with windows computers through the windows sharing protocol. Once you have your system properly confirgured to communicate with a windows smb shared directory then you can mount it to any directory in your Linux file system that you wish. Once that is setup you can use a GUI or CLI utility to move and copy files.

Thank you, Chris!
I've been cursing Micro$oft for the last 15 years, and I think it high time I switched back to an OS for which I can develop without investing all those dollar$ let alone trying not to pull out any more hair.
I just about lost all of my religion because of them, but that's what I get for going with the antichrist.
As I just posted on another thread, I would have been very happy if M$ had just stayed with Windows 3.11, but noooooo. They had to go and make it obsolete with '95 just when I had the old version tweaked to my satisfaction. Bleah!
Next time I go looking at a closed OS, I hope someone has the decency to kick me very hard in the hoohoos.
Meanwhile I will be trying my very hardest to make sure all of my friends and acquaintances switch to some version of Linux.
Call me converted!
Lee

P.S. If you ever want to really understand how backstabbing, underhanded, and conniving Billy and the people at Micro$oft can be, read the book Hard Drive.

Personally, I don't know that much about either of these versions in particular, so I will keep my response generic.
For the last 15 years I have used one version or another of Windows starting with 3.0. I found Windows cumbersome and a tremendous resource hog eg.: need more RAM, need more processor speed, need a larger hard drive. Also as soon as a new version comes out, they at Microsoft will make sure you switch over because all the newer versions of software and hardware require the new versions of Windows. I was perfectly happy with Windows 3.11. It did everything I needed it to do including ease of networking setup, but suddenly 95 came out and I could no longer get drivers for my newer hardware. They at Microsoft also NEVER let software developers know about all the little quirks which every OS has.
Conversely, I installed Linux Mandrake on a machine which had an 80 MB drive (that's 1/1024th of 80GB). It ran fine with 16 MB of RAM. Incidentally Windows 3.11 ran fine on the same machine (I think it was a 100 MHz 486).
Windows is a closed OS meaning if you actually want to develop software for it look forward to dropping $1000 at the very least for the SDK and all the other related materials.
Linux, however, is open OS. This means you can look forward to spending just a few hours and fewer dollars acquiring your developing tools and info.
Microsoft has so many people hating them that some people have made it their life's goals to trash Windows OS any way they can. Some people hack Microsoft software just for general principles and I understand it isn't much of a challenge.
In summary, I'd go Linux if I were you and never let Microsoft grab you by the short curlies.

Hi Lee,
LOL...the "ads by Google" below your post was for a free download of Lexmark drivers. Coincidence... or is Google that good? But I'm sure they were for Windows drivers not Linux, I didn't look. At work, the corporations always seem to buy Lexmark to go along with their Windows programs and their Citrix servers, and as always, the folks who are installing them tell me it's a waste of time trying to get them to work with anything but windows.
It's too bad, when you first asked, I thought their attitude had changed, but the more I look into the threads that come up, it seems that no one has any luck with getting their drivers to work with Linux. IBM is so pro Open Source these days, I can't believe they continue with this policy.
Well, I write enough emails for other causes, I guess I can add another. If I get a response I'll let you know.
Geez, when I found that pdf relating to the setup with Unix, I thought there was a solution. (OK, gonna calm down now and write my email).

Take care

I'm starting to pull my hair out with this one. I have a HP 2575 Photosmart all-in-one printer that has just started giving me low ink level errors. According to the driver, it has no ink level function, although, when I installed hplip-gui it shows me the ink level. Anyway, at first I thought the cartridge may be low, so I let it go until the cartridge actually ran out of ink, but, even with the new cartridge I still get the low ink error. I could live with the warning, but it sporadically stops the printout mid page, and, it's starting to become very annoying. There seems to be no way I can remove or stop the ink level function. I'm thinking that there's a config file with a flag set somewhere, but, for the life of me I can't find it.
I've tried reinstalling the printer driver, changing the cartridge, rebooting, restarting cups, etc. etc. etc. I'm open to any ideas, I've had this printer for years and never had a problem with it. It may be an updated driver that was installed (there have been recent cups updates in Fedora 11). It may have something to do with my moving the printer to a Fedora machine after the old Mepis box died, but I moved it weeks ago. It may be that the printer is just old, and needs to be replaced.
Has anyone seen a spurious ink level error before, or know of a way to shut off the ink level monitoring function?

TIA

That link was helpful, bit it still never gave me the driver. The driver link in the document was broken... Still, I appreciate your help.

I live near Lexington and have worked there approximately half of my life. Lexmark (IBM) has always been closed mouthed and sometimes even downright disgraceful in their dealings with the public, so I really didn't expect much.

I even posted a request for assistance from their tech support and the dumba** who responded apparently didn't even read my question thoroughly before responding. I got directed to a page to which I'd already been which only has links for Winduhs drivers.

I responded by telling them that from now on I think I'll just buy HP. That ought to stir them up!

I just looked at nvidia-smi myself. I thought it did diagnostics, unless I'm missing something, I just see it as a sort of setup program that can monitor gpu temp. Since you had your problem, I realized it would be nice to find a gpu diagnostic app that works with linux, everyone I find seems to be windows only. Going to keep my eyes out for one, maybe look a little deeper on nv forums over the weekend, or maybe see if there's something on my Hiren's CD that will do the job.

Per my understanding the process is highly controlled and reviewed, so with that being said then all you need to do is coopertate and submit patches or new moduels. If you are comfortable enough with the kernel components then you download the latest kernel snapshot from git and start making and submitting your revisions.

I found a guide called "HOWTO do Linux kernel development" at http://lwn.net/Articles/160191/ which should give you same good starting instructions.

An index of the kernel trees and quick instructions for downloading the trees using git are located at http://git.kernel.org/.

You didn't say which video card your using. I have nvidia cards, and there is a utility called nvidia-smi that is present on my Fedora 11 install (nvidia-smi is in the proprietary driver). Type nvidia-smi --help and see if it has use for you. Although I have never used it, it does testing (smi=system management interface).
Never heard of anything but a video card causing artifacts like that, you might have to break down and test another video card to make sure.
Just thinking out loud, does memtest check video card memory?

I have already connected my monitor to another comp and confirmed that is not the issue.

I beleive that my vid card went and it is no longer able to do accelerated video, please give you input if you think the problem could be caused by something else.

I have Ubuntu 9.10 running in KVM right now (yaaay, I wanted to do that for a while). If you go to
Applications-->Ubuntu Software Center and type nvidia into the search field, one of the choices is NVidia binary X.Org driver ('version 185' driver). If you click on that and then the arrow to the right, it should install the driver for you (after you click install). Your card is one of the newer cards and should be handled by this driver. I'm fully updated and I see that the 190 driver is still not listed in the choices in Ubuntu, even though it is the most recent stable driver. I guess that will come in time, it's been only listed as stable for about 2 weeks.
See if that works. If it says it's already installed, or still doesn't work, let us know and we'll take it to the next step.

I've got a bit of a wierd one here. I've got a Geforce G102M video card on my laptop which is recognised when I run the live CD but when I run Ubuntu (9.10) it doesn't seem to recognise that I need proprietry drivers any more therefore I can't set up my card.
Anyone else get this problem or know how I can get around it?
I'm only a newbe but willing to learn so don't be afraid to ask for more info or give me a complicated solution.

Thanks guys

Hello all i'm new to the boards and hope to become an active member here. ^_^

I'm currently running a software raid between two terrabyte drives and two 500 gig drives under windows 7.

If i were to install ubuntu 9.10 and setup software raid between those drive pairs would there be any weird issues when switching back and forth between windows and linux?

My Guess is that there shouldn't be any issue with this but I'd like to have a few more opinions on the subject. Any help would be very much appreciated!

I must say, after installing Ubuntu myself, if you follow mfillpot's instructions above, and enter flash into the search field in the upper right hand corner and hit enter, Adobe flash plugin is visible. Looks like easiest install of flash from any distro I've seen.
If you click on adobe flash plugin, then on the arrow on the right side of the field, flash is installed automagically.

Since you are truly new, then I can introduce you to the easiest thing in Linux distros. At the bottom of your Application menu there will be an item called Software Center or Add/Remove Programs, with this tool you can lookup and choose apps to install, that system will download them from the internet, install them and configure them for you. With most recent Linux distros a similar tool will be available, there is no need to search the internet for software anymore. You will be able to find the flash app there.

Please feel free to respond with further questions.

Windows 2000 is the only MS Os that I think is reasonably stable, but as altNull pointed out, the forced updates quite frequenctly make undocumented changes, those changes in my experience open new holes, break components, turn components off or remove backward compatability. Due to those potential issues I would personally stay away from using any form of Windows as a production server.

If you are looking are Mandriva for a corporate Linux server then by all means go with Mandriva, I know of an organization that is pretty much completely backed on Mandriva and they don't have many problems. My personal preference would be to go with Slakcware instead, many corp version tend to do custom code modifications to source code prior to compiling that alter the base functionality of apps, those alterations can lead potentiall lead you to more frequent security updates. Slakcware uses the original source from the true authors, this guarantees that the apps operate exactly as the original author intended.

Well, are you on Linux or Windows right now? I'm on Windows unfortunately. If you on Linux you need to make sure that you have GCC installed. Its the compiler that is used to compile the Linux Kernel. To do that, you can just open up a terminal and type in gcc and enter. If you get a response saying that your missing a target file or something, then you need to configure Code::Blocks to use GCC. If you get a response that says that you don't have GCC installed, then install it and then configure Code::Blocks to use GCC. In Windows, Code::Blocks the "Configure Default Compiler" comes up right away. I can't remmeber about Linux. I'll have to get on Linux and figure it out.

Oh, you need to make sure that the int is assigned a number before you assign it a number from cin. Like int "i = 0;" This prevents problems with random numbers from another program being in the memory.

I'm just pointing out the deficiencies of Windows. Something you forgot to do. You can say one is good and the other is better. But that's just an opinion, not backed from fact or experience. I was pointing out the deficiencies from experience. One night, a friend of mine and I spent 6 hrs dealing with a Windows 2000 email server that failed after Microsoft pushed another "update". That's another point, Microsoft's updates "fix" broken software vs. Linux's updates improve AND fix software.

If your going to say anything in a thread that has a technical question, back it up with data.

Good Post. You forgot the number 1 thing you can do in a Linux distro - Figure out some way to epicly break Linux, then post about it on the forums.
CentOS! And to be frank - screw Windows. They pretty much force updates on you which can really give you a headache. On top of that, its pretty much a GUI OS. Yes there is Power Shell, but its still underpowered compared to *nix's shells. On top of that, security is horrid with any Windows OS. They lack ROOT! Basically, once you have access to a Windows server or OS, then its yours. There is no layering within the file system to truly prevent people from accessing restricted files or activities. Yeah, there is Active Directory, but its buggy and easy to create loop holes (like the one I found at a local University). There are *nix alternatives that are better. What cloud or cluster computing? Linux all the way. Majority of Super Computers use a form of Linux or Unix. If you go to Amazon, eBay, or Facebook - they are all running Linux servers.

As far as Mandriva - DK. I have used CentOS and loved it. I really love the RPM vs DEB or Slack. But that comes down to personal experiences and tastes.

There is only C++. Its a computer language. Like Java or C# or Cobalt or C. I'm believe that you've mistaken IDE (integrated development environment). That's a program that you use to help you write, compile and link your program into an executable. Like there's Microsoft's terrible IDE Visual Studios. Personally I use Code::Blocks which is open source. There is also Eclipse from Sun Microsystems.

There is also Libraries for C++ which can private. Like Windows.h for programs written on windows computers. But they usually have generic or easily understood names.

I have never tried Mandrake, any release, but for a server OS I am partial to CentOS, or Ubuntu Server edition. I perfer to go command line when it comes to servers. Of course any distro can be command line, but Ubuntu Server Edition does not even come with a GUI.

Also, my worries about dependencies, since everything is working for you, were just worries. That does not mean that I'm not going to experiment and let you know the results.
Hello all!

Well, I've managed to make that thing work. I simply reinstalled Mythbuntu but this time in safe graphical mode. worked perfectly. I only noticed a weird thing when I got in the OS; my refreshrate is 61 Hz...and my screen flickers a little bit Anyway, I can see something that is not white over a black background so it's an upgrade :P

Now I have to figure out how to make my tv-tuner...I didnt hit the documentation right now, but when I select "watch tv", MythTv tells me that there are no active recordings...anyway, I'll figure that out later :)

Oh and by the way here's what I tried:

- dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg still did not work. It showed no output. I even wonder if it did anything at all :P

- xorgsetup does not seem to exist...or I am missing something (a package, bad spelling, etc...)

- xrandr did not work as well...it said something like "cannot open display". Same thing with some of the options I've used with it.

- I've also tried various options I've seen in this post: http://threebit.net/mail-archive/mythtv-users/msg10862.html

- I've managed to start X with a specific config file, (can't tell how I did it though...:P) but I always had the same problem.

- Whatever I used cut the signal between my tv and my pc. The only thing that did something is when I used the vesa driver. My screen would go all black, but i would not lose signal.

Do you guys think I should make a new post at this point? It's been a while that I'm a little bit off topic...

Thanks again!

it runs without a problem , haven't check out mutliplayer yet
now they are up 2.5.2.
just wonder how to config them into the system.
might just make icons for nexuiz since it updates so fast.

Hey Drake,

We didn't forget about you. I just checked the Lenny backports and they don't have a more recent version of either app in the repo. What you may want to do is temporarily activate the testing repo, pull down the new versions of the games, then deactivate the repo again. I don't think that will cause any dependency problems, but, to make sure, I'm going to try it first on a lenny install I'm putting on a virtual machine and I'll let you know how that works. Be patient and I might have a step by step how-to in a day or so.

I agree with you, never change a good system unless you have to.
I am also using Ubuntu 9.10 and I was tempted to keep the menu.lst but I backed it up instead just b4 I upgraded to 9.10. It's working fine on my PC, I had sound, screen resolution problems after the installation. I reported the issue to Ubuntu support and I was connected to https://launchpad.net/ and the nex thing I know after a reboot everything is working fine.

There are a few things I found since my last post;

when I hit alt+f1 I do get to the console mode. So my computer is not frozen and my tv-out does work.
A strange thing though; i do not have a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file...this is confusing me a bit :P

I'll try to do the following:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
I found that on a few websites, so I'll give it a shot. I tried it without stoping GDM, but it did nothing.

I will also try the command xrandr which I found on the Ubuntu website. I'm not sure what it does yet... from what I read it lists the different resolutions available and lets you set it.

Ciao!

http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/ch-apt-get.en.html

This is the link to the Debian Apt How-To, starting at section 3.8 is an explanation of how to run a mixed system in Debian.
You cannot enable both stable (Lenny) and testing (Squeeze) and expect apt to work properly without setting up a apt.conf file

You need to set the default release, i.e., APT::Default-Release "version" and then pin those apps that you want to pull from testing. In Debian, this could be dangerous because newer versions of apps might need dependencies that haven't yet been incorporated into the older release.

Maybe if you explained why you want to enable the testing repos, we can give you a more detailed explanation of what to do. If you want to upgrade to testing, the instructions will be different than if you just want to pull some newer apps from testing. In fact, Debian stable has a backports repo that allows you to pull newer apps into stable, without enabling testing.

Unfortunately the failure of your device is not due to issues within the Linux kernel but with the wireless card manufacturer's disregard for standards and universal compatibility. Just because one piece of hardware is difficult is no reason to go back to the system that you must constantly maintain.

Look at it as a comparison you had to search for your wireless driver to make a Linux distro work on your system, how much time do have to spend looking for the drivers in windows that just work in a Linux distro?

But if you give up so easily then you will be happy with windows where you assume things work rather than being able to confirm proper operations.

Hi again!

So I redownloaded MythBuntu, installed it, BAM! everything worked. :) Until I plugged it in my TV :(

The problem; I see the POST when I boot up, the little MythBuntu splash, then nothing. I think the next thing I am supposed to see is they greyish progess bar.

I use a good old cathodic TV with an S-Video cable. First thing, I thought it was because of the resolution. So I lowered it to the minimum thinking I would set it as high as I can afterwards. (it was 720X480 if my memory is good..) But still nothing when I plug it back in my TV. Back to my screen; the default resolution (at the login prompt) is not the one I set in my session. So I'm stuck there...duh! :P So I set up auto-login just to see if it would work; still nothing! I also noticed I could not lower the refresh rate (80 hz) Maybe thats the problem... Oh and I don't know if it makes a difference, but the image just stops diplaying as if I unpluged the cord. So it's not just a black screen. That's what makes me think my display settings are not right.

Anyway I'll check out the MythBuntu documentation as well as my TV's doc. But as usual, your help is always welcome :D

See ya!

Iceweasel is the same as Firefox. If you add that as your web browser, you still need to add a pdf reader like evince or ghostscript, or adobe reader. (you can get evince or ghostscript from the Debian repos).
Then in Firefox/Iceweasel go to Edit --> Preferences --> Applications type in pdf in the search line, and it will come up with PDF document. Change the Default to whatever pdf reader you chose to install and when you visit the web site, and click on the Price List, the Price List will come up after it is downloaded into the pdf reader.

Ask if you have anymore questions.

That device appears to be using a ralink chipset, I have not found any of their drivers to be included in a Linux distribution. What you will need to do is install ndiswrapper and download the windows xp drivers for the device, ndiswrapper will allow you to use the windows drivers to setup support in your chosen distribution.

Post back when you have the windows drivers downloaded and ndiswrapper installed so we can give you further guidance.

1. Sorry for my bad english
2. Please, help me :)

I need to take a screenshot of swf and save it as image file. I found this: http://www.mail-archive.com/swfdec@lists.freedesktop.org/msg00403.html
I wrote something like this:
#include
#include
#include
#include

using namespace std;

void swfdec_player_save (SwfdecPlayer *player, guint width, guint height, const char *filename) {
	cairo_surface_t *surface;
	cairo_t *cr;

	surface = cairo_image_surface_create (CAIRO_FORMAT_ARGB32, width, height);
	cr = cairo_create (surface);
	swfdec_player_render (player, cr);
	cairo_destroy (cr);
	cairo_surface_write_to_png (surface, filename);
	cairo_surface_destroy (surface);
}

int main(int argc, char *argv[]) {
	char *input = argv[1];
	char *output = argv[2];

	SwfdecPlayer *player = swfdec_player_new(NULL);
	SwfdecURL *url = swfdec_url_new_from_input(input);
	swfdec_player_set_url(player, url);

	swfdec_player_save(player, 300, 300, output);

	return 0;
}
, but it doesn't save screenshot to file, it save just empty png file with transparent background.
How can I fix it?

howdy folks ;)

I need a little help from y'all...
I'm looking for a small distro that can run wine relatively well and/or is not hell to install...
and I'll be running that linux distro on a virtual machine, hence the need for it to be lightweight

basically, I'm running two custom softwares for work in my home computer. one works fine in win7 (gasp! i know... i know...) while one does not. I thought "oh well, there's XP mode" but turns out my processor does not have the necessary features for it
I'm trying my luck if I can run the non-working software with wine.

any ideas? I was able to run wine relatively easily slax before (with some minor font problems) and have also made a virtual XP machine before in Ubuntu (in a separate partition) so I know I should still be able to function with two full blown OSes running alongside each other without crashing so here's hoping that win7+small distro should be fast enough as well

It seems like all the 3g WWAN technology comes from the same Partnership.

HSDPA/UMTS is in the same family of technologies as HSPA 7.2, GSM (Global System for Mobile) and LTE (Long Term Evolution). All are represented by the 3d Generation Partnership Project, a collaboration of equipment makers and carriers.

This stuff is way over my head, but, from what I've seen, the 3G connections work well with most flavors of Linux. The Sony laptops, on the other hand, I remember from a couple of years back, were problematic with Linux. I don't know from experience if that's true today, but if it was me, I would want to find some vendor that will allow that usb stick to be plugged in.

I had the same experience when I last shopped for a laptop, so, I told the store manager I was displeased, wrote an email to customer service (which was never returned), then, took my business to Dell.

I plan to buy a Sony Vaio VGN-Z51XG. Unfortunately none of my notebook dealers allows me to plug in a live-usb-stick to verify that the hardware is detected properly.

Anyway, Sony has built in a 3G-module called "everywair". I couldn't find any informations on what chipset this module is based on :-( Does anybody know what's that for a network adapter and if linux will support it?

Thanks!

Thanks for great response. As each good response it lead to further question.

Do data cached by kernel have to fit into 1GB of kernel memory?

Is there different in handling this memory between 32bit and 64bit version of x86 arch?

I'm asking because on a busy 32-bit server (apache serving static content - from 2 or 3 week non-stop) I see:
~ > free
             total used free shared buffers cached
Mem:      16633136    3370264   13262872          0     520812    2391332
-/+ buffers/cache:     458120   16175016
Swap:      1052248         88    1052160
My estimation is that if the system kept all served files in the cache the memory would filled in few hours. So there are some software limit of the memory usage.

I'm getting to the point where I hate Lexmark more than I even used to. At least my HP3900 gets recognized with all these versions (not sure about MEPIS, yet).

The sendfile() function uses kernel instead of user-space memory. That means that your application heap will not be increased appreciably. However, the OS will still cache the data as that is not a matter of the application calling sendfile() as it is a matter of how the OS caches data read from disc. So, yes, it will use system memory to cache the data.

Given current pricing and performance, I would recommend holding off on SSD's as primary system drives for another couple of years, especially given a 7200rpm 1tb disc is under $100 USD these days. Also, the file system support for SSD's (noting your query about support for TRIM, etc) is still coming along. Even the drives themselves are just now getting support for TRIM in their firmware, and there are still problems with that (see current problems with Intel SSD's wrt TRIM support firmware updates). So, rather than spending big $$ to fall over the bleeding edge, wait awhile and let things settle down, both from the technology as well as the price perspective.

At least it isn't a game port device. I wrote an x-windows driver to use my game port joystick as a mouse over 10 years ago. It worked ok, but I never did get comfortable using it for mousing vs. flying... :-) Anyway, the biggest issues for the driver was the code for debounce control, edge detection, and acceleration. It was one of those "fun" projects, just to know I could do it, and to get more comfortable with low-level x-lib programming.

16 meg is too little for most current linux distributions, including RHEL versions such as 4.2 or later. There are some distributions that are aimed at minimal systems, such as DSL (Damned Small Linux), or are intended to be built for such systems as is Gentoo. In your case, you probably want to check out DSL since the current version of Gentoo requires 64MB of RAM to run the minimal installer.

What means that i.e. in an Apache serving many times the same static content turning EnableSendfile Off might bust the performance, because files would be read from memory rather then from disk.

Are you just trying to play the original Myst? If you are, I don't see the point of installing a virtual machine or anything of the sort; it runs perfectly well in DOSbox (I should know, I've set it up a few times). The only thing to keep in mind when running it from DOSbox is that it requires the CD in the drive to play, which DOSbox won't automatically pick up. Basically all I did was edit .dosboxrc to automatically mount my games directory (~/Games) as C: and mount my DVD drive on startup.

When DOSbox is installed, you should probably check to see if your arrow keys work in it. I know some versions of Ubuntu changed something involving the keymapping which causes DOSbox to map the arrow keys incorrectly (only the arrow keys, fortunately). If your arrow keys don't work, just open up a text editor and create the file .dosboxrc (no file extension) in your home folder. Add the following lines:
[sdl]
usescancodes=false

[autoexec]
@mount c ~/Games
@mount d /media/cdrom -t cdrom
@c:
@cls
Now the keyboard should work just fine, your C:\ drive is mounted to the Games directory in your home, and the CD drive is mounted as well. You should be able to install and run Myst just fine this way without having to start up a virtual machine to play it.

In reality, since Linux users typically do not use IE or most Microsoft products, then you really should not try looking at your website through IE in Linux. Going through the hassle of setting up Vbox with every type of OS is eventually rewarding. While you can do your development within Linux, you should always test the website with every browser on every OS, or get a lacky to do it for you.

Good luck. Personally, though I did not take a class, I found C# to be to controlling to be considered a programing language. You have to do garbage collection their way. It makes sense, but I never thought of that when I started. When I use the broadband connection directly on the Palm Treo, I never really noticed to much of a difference, Probably because the apps on the phone are minimized and the amount of data that has to be received is a fraction of the amount of data that it takes to fill up the firefox screen when I have the laptop tethered to it (Verizon Palm Treo 700p uses a browser called Blazer and I've noticed a line at the bottom of the screen that says that google is reformatting the screen for mobile).
Ironically, I got the DVD box set of Myst 1-3 and it would not run in Windows XP (even though its supported), so I to my VirtualBox and added a Win95 machine. It worked but i wanted to play full screen, so I played with the graphics of 90s for ever until i finally gave up. Then I finally got it working with the Wine with the tutorial that was posted. I had to create an ISO of the dvd on the computer and then point wine to it. Worked sweet.

Of course my friends and family didn't see me for a few days. When they asked "WHY?" I was like "MYST!" I just don't get people that don't like Myst. Its like not liking portal.

I think he's also saying that Microsoft can Suck it! Yeah, they are claiming innovation, they are pushing the envelope, but they are really peddling backwards while going "upwards" in reverse. What was their last innovation? Oh, look its Windows 7. It uses the same basic kernel as Windows XP, the same basic GUI of Vista (cutting out the bugs), and its still slower than XP. What did they innovate? They added nice floating icons that bounce around the screen. Touch screen? No...that's not it. Oh look we made the GUI more accesses able. WAIT you still have to through 3 different screens to get to the networking stuff, and they are stilling using their failed version of a GUI root. What have they improved? They were able to sucker in some people, but not enough to call marketing a success. And they just handed the mini-notebook market over to Ubuntu. I think that's what Linus is saying Thanks for the keys!

     LPI Certifications - http://www.lpi.org/
     Linux+ Certification - http://www.comptia.org/certifications/listed/linux.aspx
    There may be others that I am unaware of.

Apache
     I don't know if there are any certification program for MySQL administration.

MySQL
     MySQL Certification - http://www.mysql.com/certification/

PHP

They also just released 1.97. But the only manual for it is located within the man pages. Check them out by going to the command line and typing in man grub2 or grub2 --help .

Personally, with my X-Fi Extreme Audio, I had to do several searches for open source drivers. They do exist. Depending on your distro, you might have to manually install them. With Fedora 10 and 11 the drivers were automatically installed. Google +X Fi Extreme Your Card Here +Linux +driver +OSS . Also check your distro's forums, there is usually a support forum for these matters.

Swap can be a file, but usually it is setup as a partition. Swap is a location on a hard drive that is designated for less used memory files and is also used as RAM if your used memory exceeds your physical RAM size.

You must remember that your hard drives are much slower than RAM chips, even though with swap you may be able to run many things, the performance will be highly degraded compared to running the same apps from RAM.

I have moved this article to web management because the contents of the post are about your web management system.

The idea of a wiki form of article publishing is quite interesting, however this leads me to question how you plan to control the content to limit inaccurate information and spam posts within existing articles. Do you have functions built in to identify only revised text and the author who revised them to the readers? Is there a tool in place that you can use to quickly remove specific changes from a particular user?
If so please point me to a page that identifies the modification and the user responsible so I can see the output.

Additionally, is this platform based upon open source software, commercial software or a mixed platform. Would you publish a guide to setting up a similar system so others can test the functionality on their own sites to speed up development. If this is your own creation, then I would highly recommend setting up a guide about the setup and a section on your site for just the framework, so that other can use it and share ideas/solutions to make your site the core location for development of the system.

I think you have confused terms, windows uses a paging file, in Linux you setup a swap partition.

The general recommendation for a swap partition is to make it 2X the amount of RAM installed, however with your current amount of memory I would recommend setting up a 2G swap partition.

Firstly, i apologize if this is in the wrong forum category. I've been procrastinating on this for a while now, because i do not quite have my system complete; but this feature has been usable for a long time now, and i guess that i can start letting others use it...

Anyway, as some of you may already know (or not, i guess), i have http://LinuxIntro.com which is (obviously) a Linux and open source software oriented website. I am too damned busy to keep up with creating new articles, and updating out of date articles, and exploring new areas of Linux and Open Source software to educate myself enough to make articles for others to learn it.

I have been running my unfinished Content Management System on this site (and on my political reform website, that is likewise falling into a state of neglect for the same reasons), and noticed that many others are trying to assist the open source movement by publishing their own articles on their own little home pages, or blogs.

So now it is a community content management system; a hybrid between a wiki, a blog, and a high-end commercial CMS. It allows users who have any at least Level 1 privileges (normal 'users' are level 0) to publish articles and edit articles (even if they did not create it, as sometimes another user may have more experience, and thus more useful information to add to an existing article), and for users with Level 2 privileges to move articles and upload images, and for users with Level 3 (highest you can be) privileges to delete articles and to delete images.

I don't have any publishing guidelines written yet, but for the most part it is common sense. All articles must be filed in the appropriate category (just try your best, and at worst i will just move it to the correct category), and limit only 1 video per article page (articles can have many pages).

When you log in, you can click on "Account" and then "My Website" to enter your own website address for others to see. When a user reads an article you've written, they can click on your name below the article, and see your profile, which will display anything you want to share (website, bio, interests, etc). If you publish an article, you are not limited to keeping it only on Linux Intro. You can publish it on your own site, or any other site; however you cannot delete it, as others may have made a contribution to your article, and that would not be fair to them. You can add YOUR VERY OWN you tube videos that you already have, or any new ones that you make; just remember 1 video per page. Also, if you DO post a video with your article, make sure that what you do and say in the video is typed out in the article's paragraphs. This is not a video site, and so textual content is mandatory for articles; also text is accessible and video is not, so i try to adhere to 801 standards as much as possible (or practicable).

For the record, in case anyone is wondering, this is NOT an attempt to 'steal users' from this website. It is only an attempt to create a more user-engaged, comprehensive, and in-depth informational material for new Linux and Open Source users to benefit from; and to make it MUCH easier to publish content.

Oh, almost forgot, if you have been a member of this forum for longer than 4 months, and have over 200 posts, PM me HERE with your Linux Intro user name, and i will raise your security clearance on Linux Intro so that you can publish articles (otherwise you're only a user). If you already have a moderator/maintainer/admin status here on this forum, then PM me HERE with your user name on Linux Intro and i will raise your security level on Linux Intro.

I know that the site may still look like crap, but i'm about to redesign it again to look much more clean (like i just did with http://Ionisis.com ) and presentable. I am brainstorming for ideas atm, and should begin with a new design tomorrow.

Also, if you do not find an appropriate category for your article, then feel free to suggest one; but i believe that i have a fairly comprehensive --yet still generalized-- list to choose from. And please do let me know what you think about this system.

Try to remember that "articles" are not the same as "article pages". An article is an object that is independent from its pages, and has a parent-children --or one-to-many relationship with its pages. You publish the ARTICLE's details, like its title, keywords, and description, and THEN you publish any/all of the pages that belong to that article. You can completely ignore the "previous" and "next" options, as the system takes care of pagination automatically; those are for advanced use, namely, chainlinking disparate articles together (the end of one article leading to the beginning of another).

Enjoy, and please do give feedback!

Good news, I decided to try from the start, my old laptop runs Puppy 1 with the 64 mb of ram. I'll experiment with this for a while and will try 2, 3, then 4 if each works accordingly. I was reading that I'll have to setup a pagefile which will help with the low ram issue I have. Applications do start but take a while to load up. I'm quite excited.

Hi,

I had 9.04 running rather smoothly on my HP2133. Now I updated to 9.10 - and here are my problems ...

- The Boot menu doesn't list 9.10, just 9.04 - but does load 9.10. That's probably due to me saying to keep the old menu.lst and not much of a problem.
- When it loads, it says "longhaul is currently broken in your configuration". ??
- Also, there is an error message saying that the swap partition could not be mounted - has never been a problem before.
- Way more annaoying are the next two problems: the touchpad does not work anymore (USB mouse oK) - and there's no sound, not even an audio device apart from "Dummy stereo".

Other than that, it really looks nice - and I was tempted to try out the Ubuntu One service :-)

Looks like kind of a lecture on "Never change a running system", eh? Any hints on hoew to reslove these problems? Uh - I'm not much of a Linux crack, by the way, so....

Any helpful hint is greatly appreciated.

I posted this on the mepislovers forums right after the picture appeared without the text around the internet.

Picture was missing the explanation, got it from link on identi.ca:

Microsoft tried to torpedo the success of the Japan Linux Symposium by launching their Windows 7 product that same day. They even had setup a big promotion booth across the street from the conference center.

During a break, we decided to make some fun of Microsoft and dragged Linus over there. When we arrived there, Linus was sold immediately on the product as you can see in the picture. At least that's what the sales guy thought. He obviously had no idea who he was dealing with. But in the end Linus surprisingly did not buy a copy. Wise man!

Heh...

Oh yeah, the link if it works outside of identi.ca http://tr.im/CFJi

Just another idea. Do you have the Ubuntu Live CD? If you do, can you boot up the Live cd and see if the modem is recognized after booting. I agree with mfillpot, the ath5k module should be in your kernel, it's been in the Linux kernels for quite some time. After booting with the Live CD, if the modem is not recognized, maybe then try to modprobe ath5k again. It might take some experimenting to figure out what is going on.
It is possible that the iso you originally installed from was faulty.

Wait, I just noticed something.... In Ubuntu you might have to use sudo, so the command would be "sudo modprobe ath5k" (without quotes). Sorry, my bad, I still don't have an Ubuntu install running so I can try these things out first. With the new 9.10 release just out I might actually get to do that this weekend.

Let me know what happens when you try the sudo modprobe ath5k command (if it doesn't work try the Live cd). And don't worry about being new to Linux, after 5 years I'm only starting to get used to it myself. Sharing knowledge is what the Linux Community is all about.

"Why not buy a router so you can both plug into the same port?"

Because this unit worked flawlessly with Ubuntu 7.04 (someone else installed) until I upgraded it to 8.04!
I do have a router, but it is in use somewhere else.
Also, what's the point of having a 'free' and 'open' OS if none of the hardware I have works with it? Am I going to have to learn some programming language and spend hours trying to dig up the tech data on the hardware to make it work? Bleah!
And I repeat, it worked with that old version!

C++/C are the priamary langauges of Linux. C# is a Microsoft gimmick designed at suckering in developers. It only works within the .net framework of Windows, thus anything built in C# cannot be directly compiled Linux or Unix. If your truly a supporter of Open Source, then you'll boycott it like the rest of us.

As for IDE, I recommend Code::Blocks. Its Open Source, has many of the same support features as Microsofts IDE, and it supports a multitude of Compilers (including the Microsoft one). But for beginners, the best thing is a text editor with color coding for multiple languages. I recommend Notepad++ or gedit. Both are open source and gedit comes on most Linux distros that use Gnome. That, along with GCC is the best for getting your feet wet in programming.

I like Go and Chess, but is hard to find a decent online system that doesn't want to charge money for membership. Ironically, the best platform for these sorts of games would be social websites like facebook, but they don't seem interested in satisfying intellectual stimulation. And even if they did, the fact that they don't check 3rd party apps, which have unlimited access to the Facebook API, means that all 3rd party apps can't be trusted unless they are created by the actual Facebook company.

It is Linus, and it's not necessarily a bad thing. Competition leads to innovation which is why the Linux and FOSS projects have matured so quickly. Everytime MS or Apple release an update it just encourages the developers of other OSs to think outside of the box and compete.

I congratulate MS for their effort, but the lack of abilities and lack of adequate security in their products is why I will not go back to using them.

Hey Peter
I can see that ath_hal is in your lsmod, that is needed for your wifi card, but I don't see the ath5k module. Could you try to (as root) "modprobe ath5k" (without quotes) in terminal and see if that helps.
While I try to read the forums once a day, I've had a busy work schedule. So, be patient, we'll get it working eventually.
I'm pretty sure that I used the ath5k module to get my atheros working on the thinkpad, it is used for the widest range of atheros devices.
If that doesn't work give us the listing of lspci from the terminal and we'll go from there.

you can install slackware without even a cd-drive, doing it all from the hard drive.
For this you will need
1. be able to boot from a linux system (it can be a live system)
2. a sufficiently big partition to hold the slackware*.iso file and to extract it
   to a directory in that same partition
3. a boot loader installed on your hard drive (such as grub)
4. and 2 empty partitions for installing slackware (one for the linux system and
   a smaller one for the swap)

If you meet these requirements then you can read this page where I describe how
I did it from my hard drive. I explained it for grub. For other boot loaders (eg lilo)
you'll need to adapt ...

So I got my brand new ram and CPU. All excited (and worried it would not work), I unpacked it all, replaced my parts, booted up and TADAAAA! I got 2 times the CPU speed and 2 times the RAM :-) So this week-end I'll try out MythBuntu and give you some updates afterwards. (So if anyone else is wondering if it's easy to upgrade your hardware in Ubuntu, the answer is yes :))

thanks for replying. its an approximation only and the hpd are a recognized reference of the popularity. i dint uses the smaller distros for the reason u said as they can be influenced by directed effort and as i do people who dont use them look to c whats up and coming. however u cannot get to the top 15 by fraud alone. so it is true that ubuntu has more users than fadora and mint has less. this is more accurate than user agent strings or sales figures which say linux is at .9%. if any one has better numbers i think the pount is to use the stuff we know the get an estimate so that companies dont quote the .9% as y they dont support linux drivers.

To make it a little easier, since your comp only has 64Mb of RAM the changes of running a live CD or even a GUI is small. Your best bets would be to try Puppy (which you have) or possibly Arch Linux. You can attempt to install Slackware, but if Arch doesn't work then Slackware won't either.

The only other option is for you to install a distro that has no window manager and runs in Command Line Mode, which means that you can't use apps like firefox or anything Graphical User Interface based. But in CLI mode you can use links or lynx to access the internet in a text based browser.

Interesting equation, except I wouldn't use DistroWatch HPD as a variable in any equation to calculate Linux install base. I know of too many distros that encourage their user base to click on the so-called DistroWatch vote area to increase their particular distros standings. That alone invalidates its use as a variable.

Nice try though. And I'm glad that someone is working on the illusive Linux share.

Since you are stating that you are short 64Mb of RAM, then I would assume that you are using 32Mb - 184Mb, in that case I would not be confident that any modern distro with a GUI can run on that system. You can try a distro based on ratpoison, xfce or lxde to see if they will work. However you should be able to setup the system to be CLI-only and run it with minimal applications.

Just don't look for anything fancy when you have minimal resouces available.

Wow, 64mb ram, I don't think I ever ran anything in 64 mb but DOS. I'm sure that there must be Linux distros that will run under 64 mb, but they will probably be more of a project for you, then a live cd that just runs.

Well I tried Puppy on that old computer, it starts to boot, then looks like it hangs.. from what I can tell from the puppy website, I don't have enough ram, 64 mb short, will have to look into it more. I could try Gentoo also, does this one have a boot from cd option only too like puppy does?

Thanks for all the suggestions on a distro. First I have a simple problem, and I think the solution is probably simple.
Seems the first step should be to get lilo to boot a live distro from a CD. How do I set up lilo to do this? Does it know how to control a CDROM? Maybe I'm missing something obvious?

I have previously tried GRUB-which did not work. Then I tried PLOP, which was a FLOP. It hung up and I had to reboot, fortunately the MBR was still intact.

It would help if we knew more about what Linux distro you are running, but, whatever distro it is, it needs samba to communicate with windows.
Do you have samba installed?
Do you have smb (or smbd) enabled in the services section. In Gnome I have a Services menu in System --> Administration. If you have that in your distro you can check to see (1) if it's there and if it is (2) if it's enabled.
I'm sorry I don't actively use samba, but a quick way to check would be to type "service smb on". I use Fedora with Gnome, and, if I type that phrase, there is no reply if samba is installed and the smb daemon is running. If it is not installed I get an error message.
If you don't have samba installed, you can go to your administration menu, click on add/remove software, search for samba then install it.
Since I don't know what distro or Window Manager you are using I can't be more precise in my instructions than that.

LOL..this is under Suse Enterprise, my dumb. If your using Gnome in Suse, the above should work the same as in Fedora.

Hey guys! I started a long time ago with basic HTML not that great at it however I never really liked guides..I found 1 guide for python that I like sadly I can't figure out it. A little bit before I got into python I got into making epic picture in GIMP..and I entered one contest where I doubt my entry got looked at. Anyways I learn code quick with actually people as opposed to a guide because I sometimes have questions but I do pick it up rather quick. Quite honestly I want to learn most web based/gaming languages such as PhP, C, and all that other good stuff. So I'm looking for any project that I could help out with..preferably a social networking project if it exists. But yea please tell me if there are any groups..

PS. I would like to help with a social networking site because I think the time is right for a new one..seeing as facebook is currently failing miserably.

If its mainly for watching tv, you would need to lookup MythTV or the other options. I had a quick at the comparison chart here http://www.deviceguru.com/comparing-10-free-media-center-apps/ (http://www.deviceguru.com/comparing-10-free-media-center-apps/) (pdf at the end of the post) and Boxee doesnt support tv tuner cards.

On the slow response of Boxee, you can consider disabling vsync (http://forum.boxee.tv/showpost.php?p=635&postcount=2).

@Goineasy9: Boxee is Open Source (source code available for download after registration at the website)

Actualy, Hulu seems to be a website that "offcialy" streams only to americain customers for legal reasons. I've seen a way to bypass this, but I do not want to listen to only american TV. I'm from Québec so I also want to watch stuff from my place.

Although, Hulu seems to be a very good site...I wish they had some of our stuff there :)

If you are referring to either Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5.x or CentOS 5.x, then there should not be any issues with it. The differences are minor and I had no problems with the upgrade. I've just this week upgraded to 5.4 and still have not issues with existing software. However, before you do an upgrade like this, it is a good idea to make a bit-image copy of your system disc(s) in case there are issues, so you can efficiently revert it back.

Hey guys!

Just an update and a question (again :P)

So I finaly decided to go with a Hauppauge 1600 tv tuner. I got it yesterday and threw it in my system. Booted Ubuntu, detected and installed my card, everything is perfect :-) I also installed a wireless keyboard/mouse combo and there again, I did not have to fight with it.

So I started boxee, and the interface was kind of sluggish. But it must be my wireless mouse since I did not have any problem using my keyboard. And suddently my mouse started to respond faster...oh well...I will also get a new CPU and some extra RAM because as I said, I think I will get tight on resources.

So I started messing around with boxee, looking for the option to start treaming the TV...but never found it. I went through a bit of documentation on Boxee's website and a few others on the net; nothing! Is Boxee only to watch videos that has been previously recorded on my harddrive or streaming videos on the web? If that's the case, I might just throw away Boxee, because that's not what I wanted to do :P

Ciao!

Is your server running Centos 5.2, and are you asking if you upgrade it to 5.3 will you have problems? If this is the case it would depend on the requirements of informix 4gl itself. This is the home page for IBM informix:
http://www-01.ibm.com/software/data/informix/
There is no mention of 4gl, unless someone here is familiar with the product, maybe you should contact IBM.
That, of course, is if I guessed your original question correctly.

As a total newbie to linux I decided to install ubuntu on an old Rock Agenda laptop that I used to use with Windows XP. The installation appears to have worked fine but it does not recognise the Netgear WPN511 wireless PCMIA that I need to contact my router. Am I correct to assume that I need to install a linux driver for this card? If so, any ideas where I could find one as I am not getting any response from Netgear. All suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks, Peter

I just checked on my Fedora 11 install which uses Gnome like Ubuntu. My machine (which has a dual boot with Vista), recognizes the windows partitions but does mount them. How do you know that your windows partitions are mounted? It's possible that Ubuntu automatically mounts the windows files.
To Check (I know there is a cli way to do this but....) On the desktop, there should be a Computer Icon, by clicking it it should show you all of your HD partitions. A right click on any of them will bring up a menu, one of the choices on the bottom would be to mount or unmount the drive. If the choice says mount, then, the partition isn't mounted. If it says unmount then it is mounted and you can click on unmount to unmount it. Heh...might've been easier to tell you the cli way.

unmount /dev/sdaX where X is the partition you want to unmount.

As root fdisk -l (that's a small L not a 1) will give you a list of your partitions, mine looks like this:
   Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1               1           5       40131   de  Dell Utility
/dev/sda2               6        1918    15360000    7  HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda3   *        1918       28026   209718272    7  HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda4           28027       60801   263265187+   5  Extended
/dev/sda5   *       28027       28157     1048576   83  Linux
/dev/sda6           28157       33379    41943039+  83  Linux
/dev/sda7           33379       34423     8388607+  83  Linux
/dev/sda8           34423       60801   211884031+  83  Linux

sda2 & 3 are windows partitions, Dell utility doesn't have to be mounted either, but is not a partition used by windows.

Also, mounting partitions doesn't eat up space (or much memory), what did you mean by that?

The plug-in needed for the device is installed (barry-sync). According to the OpenSync project website, the Evolution2 (evo2-sync) plug-in is still under development. The article "Syncing a Blackberry to Linux", where I got the syncing instructions, was written by Joe Barr. Is there another Evolution plug-in available?

3g should be a fast(er) connection, I guess your going to have to call someone. Just tell them your trying to tether your computer with the broadband connection, then ask your questions. Don't mention Linux until your get some answers first. It's amazing how fast some providers like to cut you off when you tell them your trying to connect using Linux.
BTW, I read that Windows 7 has a Network Connections menu choice also, so they might not even get into the OS questions with you.

Why not buy a router so you can both plug into the same port? I have one similar to the one in the link:

There might even be cheaper ones there, didn't have time to shop around.
