I have installed ubuntu and the installation went very well the computer runs fine and connects readily to the internet. I would like to learn the appropriate skills to use this operating system extensively. What is the best source of paid support or education to get up to speed.

Thank You

Canonical offers paid commercial support for Ubuntu. You can see more details at http://www.ubuntu.com/support/paid

It's expensive, so I'd only get it if you're a business that needs professional support. If you're just a normal person, I would use the community.

I found that www.linuxfromscratch.org was a good experience to build your own linux OS and it makes you realise how it all works.
The only real thing is you will need a medium knowledge of using Terminal/Shell.

Kind Regards

OS X 10.4.11 and Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon 7.10, not forgetting fedora :D

I think I asked the wrong question.

I asked for a source of paid support thinking that I would learn how to use Linux

I have since learned that paid support only gets you one computer up and running and then only supports the programs on the disc that includes the operating system

I guess what I am really looking for is a place that will help educate me how to use upgrade and add proprietary software etc. in linux

Like a class or a tutorial -- that is easy for a dullard to understand -- where someone will walk a person through the basics.

As easy as it was to get the computer up and running it can't be that hard to do the rest of the stuff it just does not make sense to this windows idiot.

Thank You

What are you wanting to Learn?

I'm currently training someone on how to use Linux as a System Administrator. At the moment we are learning about Apache.

I was planning to clean up the training material a little bit and post it to the Linux User Group that I'm going to at the moment - http://www.beijinglug.org/

For the moment the training will be free but if it gets popular and takes up too much time I might charge for it.

The way I'm teaching is they way I learn which means that I don't hold your hand a lot. Rather I teach you how to learn for yourself.

Instead of writing up a tutorial on how to set something up I'm:
* Giving a list of tasks with each task build on top of the last one.
* Providing a list of terms and asking the a definition of each word (knowing the jargon is half the battle)
* Providing a list of resources that should be enough for you to get started.
* Provide a list of words to search for to get more information.

The task list is mainly for yourself and isn't graded but if you get stuck you can email me. I do check the glossary though to make sure you understand what the words mean (and didn't just copy them from somewhere else).

Anyway if you're interested send me an email.

Also Redhat and CompTia have Linux training if you want to go to a school and learn about Linux.

Basically if you do a search for Linux certification and then look for Operator or Workstation Certification.

Lots of Schools teach you enough information to pass the exam which may or may not be what you are trying to learn :-)
